Clix It Up- Marvel HeroClix: Captain America

Greetings, HeroClix fans!

We hope you’ve all been enjoying the latest Marvel HeroClix release, Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.! We’ve had a lot of fun playing refreshed and updated versions of the Invaders, Hydra, Avengers, and of course the sets namesake, S.H.I.E.L.D. Today, we’re going to look at things a little differently than we have previously with our team building articles – rather than building something we’d play, we’re going to look at different options for specific characters. In our premiere Clix It Up article, we’re looking at different roles that can be filled by the Star-Spangled Avenger himself, Steve Rogers – AKA, Captain America!

Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.- Steve Rogers

In the role of a Leader for your squad is a super rare from Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and brings Steve Rogers into the mix, back when he was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., taking back the reigns of the organization from the evil of Norman Osborn. This version of Steve comes in at 150 points, is Indomitable, and possesses the S.H.I.E.L.D. team ability. And, despite his offensive prowess, he features primarily as someone who improves his teammates. Starting with his Leading By (Very Good) Example trait, which states that he can use Leadership. Which, by itself, is great for a 150-point piece, but we don’t stop there. The trait also says that when Steve Rogers hits an opposing character, other friendly characters with the S.H.I.E.L.D. keyword can use Probability Control when they attack this turn! Steve also has a special defensive power called Energy Shield Extend, which grants him the use of three powers – Energy Shield/Deflection, Sidestep, and Toughness. In addition to that, adjacent friendly characters that share a keyword with him (Avengers, Invaders, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Soldier) can use Energy Shield/Deflection. Couple those two abilities with his standard powers of Enhancement and Empower, and you’ve got a natural leader who improves his teammates in almost every way!

Marvel HeroClix: Original Avengers Fast Forces Pack- Captain America

Our next choice for Cap is all about Board Control, pairing both multiple attack options and force repositioning. A 100-point piece that comes from the Original Avengers Fast Forces pack, this version of Captain America is a versatile team member for Avengers, Invaders, or Soldier teams. With the ability to break or get through damage reducers on each click, this Cap makes use of two advantageous special powers. The first, appearing on his opening two clicks of attack is called Shield Ricochet, states that you may give Captain America a ranged combat action, locking his damage value at it’s printed value until actions resolve. After that ranged combat action resolves, he may make a second ranged combat attack as a free action. Since this Captain America only has 1 target on his ranged attacks, this is a handy way to open up for full damage on multiple opponents. His second, called Avengers, Assemble appears on his first three clicks of damage, and is really handy for manipulating and moving your force around the board. This power allows you to give Captain America a power action, and lets you choose another friendly character that shares a keyword with him and doesn’t have 2 action tokens. That character can then be given a move action as a free action, with their speed value halved for this action.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble!- Captain America

If you’re looking for a straight up Attacker, our pick is from the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble! set, and is the most versatile natural ranged attacker to be looked at today, while simultaneously packing a serious amount of dangerous close combat prowess. With a range of 6 squares and two targets, his Improved Targeting: Ignores Elevated Terrain, and Ignores Blocking Terrain make him able to sling his shield all over the map – it’s great for taking out snipers attempting to hide on a ledge in stealth! He also gains the advantage of top dial free movement with Sidestep, which allows him to reposition himself slightly for ranged attacks, or to make use of his Super Soldier Serum special power that appears on his first three clicks of damage. This special ability states that Captain America can use both Close Combat Expert and Empower – meaning he can not only pump himself up via CCE, but also his fellow adjacent close combat attackers with Empower. This version of Cap also has the option to be played at a 4-click, 100-point dial, which is all about up close encounters, pairing Charge, Sidestep, Combat Reflexes, Exploit Weakness, and Close Combat Expert. He’s built to dish out damage and lock down your opponents.

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Captain America

Finally, we take a look at a Captain America that fills the role of both Secondary Attacker and Support unit – and, at 65 points, allowing you to build around him with little impact on your overall force total! One of the more popular pieces from the recent Age of Ultron Storyline OP event, the Uncommon Captain America  features several abilities in particular that are unique when compared to the other versions of Cap we’ve featured today. First, and perhaps most significantly, is his ability to use the Police team ability – meaning that when Captain America is adjacent to a friendly ranged attacker, you’ll modify the targets defensive value by -1, should Cap also have a line of fire to the target.  Also unique to this character is his special movement power, called Cap’s Motorcycle. This gives Steve the ability to use Defend, allowing him to share his 17 defensive value with adjacent friendly characters. In addition to that, Cap also gains the Move and Attack ability, but doesn’t modify his attack value by -2 when using it! He’s also in possession of a trait called Take Cover!, which states that adjacent friendly characters modify their defense by +1 against ranged combat attacks, if not already modified by this effect – this particular version of Captain America is all about force longevity and protecting his allies. However, perhaps most importantly for this particular Cap is his opening click of the always-useful Outwit power. The ability to counter powers is a key for successful squads, and to gain it on such a versatile 65 point piece is almost a no-brainer to put on your force.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble – Meet Iron Man, Hulk & Steve Rogers

Greetings HeroClix fans, and welcome to the second part of our exploration into the chase figures from the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set. Today, we’re looking at three of the founders of the Avengers – Hulk, Iron Man, and Steve Rogers!

As you’ll recall from our last article, the chases from this set feature some of earth’s mightiest heroes in slightly different styles – alternate takes on classic characters, if you will. Last time, we looked at Black Widow with the power of Mjolnir, and Hawkeye empowered by Pym Particles as Goliath. Today, we kick things off with Tony Stark, the Invincible Iron Man!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble Iron Man Chase

This iteration of the technological Avenger is Tony in his ‘Heavy’ armor that he wore near the beginning run of the Marvel Now! initiative. Designed for close quarters combat and a stand-up fight, rather than the typical dogfighting that Iron Man does, this suit begins with a trait called Ultra-Dense Alloys, which gives Iron Man a myriad of defensive abilities. Whenever Iron Man would be dealt damage, you will roll a d6 that can’t be rerolled. On a 1, he can use Invulnerability, on a 2, he can use Invincible, on a 3-4, damage is reduced by 3, and on a 5-6, damage is ignored. He also has a special power on movement called Laser Replicate, which states that when he is given a ranged combat action with his damage value locked until actions resolve. After the ranged combat attack resolves, Iron Man may then make a ranged combat attack as a free action. He also carries a special power on attack called Magnetic Concussion allowing him to use both Force Blast and Pulse Wave. Finally, he has a special damage power called Give Me All the Cameras, which allows Iron Man to use Outwit, in addition to having Improved Targeting, allowing him to ignore Hindering Terrain, Characters, and Blocking Terrain, destroying all blocking terrain along it’s line of fire to the target.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Hulk Chase

Truly, Iron Man is a force of technological prowess, only rivaled by the indomitable force of giant destruction the Hulk. This version of Dr. Bruce Banner is from the Hulk: The End comic, the story in which he is the last surviving human on Earth. The Last Titan trait states that Hulk can use Super Strength, and that all of his powers can’t be countered. In addition to that, Hulk also begins the game with a Titan token on his card, and once per turn, when he damages an opponent with an attack, you’ll place an additional Titan token on his card. Over the course of his dial, he also has a special ability called Hulk Hates World which allows Hulk to use Charge without having to halve his speed value, in addition to Improved Movement – Ignores Hindering Terrain, Characters, and Ignores Blocking Terrain, Destroying the Terrain as the Character Moves Through It. He also brings the defensive power Only One There Is, which shows Hulk’s resilience with the ability to use Invulnerability and Regeneration when he has no action tokens. Additionally, when this special power is revealed, you’ll stop turning the dial and remove a Titan token from the card. And, subsequently, whenever he would take damage, you’d instead remove a Titan token from this card. The only downside, sadly, is that Hulk can’t add any additional Titan tokens to the card.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Steve Rogers Chase

Our final hero today is Steve Rogers, from the time where he was both leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Secret Avengers – and, for a short time, the man in possession of the Nova force. That helmet granted the power of flight, as well as tactical expertise, here represented by the trait Nova Helmet Targeting Assist. Always a leader of men, this trait states that each turn, one friendly character with the Avengers keyword and another friendly with the Nova Corps keyword can use Precision Strike when targeting a single adjacent character. A Sharpshooter in possession of formidable powers, Steve Rogers makes use of the abilities of the Nova Force through the power I’m Pretty Good with Bank Shots. This power states that when he targets a single opposing character with a ranged combat attack and hits, after actions resolve he can make a second ranged combat attack against a different character – but, when he does, lines of fire are drawn and range is counted from the first hit character’s square.
