Greetings, HeroClix fans!
With the arrival of the Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline OP event, we wanted to take a step back from our normal previews, and put together an article focused on team building, featuring some of the figures you might not have had a chance to see yet from the first series of booster bricks.
As this is a series of events based around the character Ultron, it’s only logical that his ‘father’, Hank Pym would be a part of the set. In the spirit of Dr. Pym being the creator of Ultron, today we’re going to focus on a team featuring the Avengers keyword!
For team Science Avengers, we start off with Protector, the former Marvel Boy. Playable at 100 points, Protector is six clicks long, and has the Flight ability, with a range of 6 squares with 1 target. His dial, while fairly basic in appearance, has a few notable powers that make him a great team player. To start, he has a special power on his first three clicks called I Am the Protector, which grants him the ability to use Defend and Invulnerability. Coupled with that power, Protector also brings 3 clicks of Probability Control – so sticking him back from frontline attackers means he can share his 18 defense with other ranged attackers, like Hank Pym.
Played at 50 points, Hank Pym has only 3 clicks of life, but a range of 5 clicks with 1 target, and the ever-important Outwit. In addition to that, he also has a special power called Temporal Fixes for the Age of Ultron, which allows him to use Outwit and Probability Control! Not to be outdone, he also carries two traits, both of which give him distinct advantages. The first, Morph: Many Identities allows you to give Hank a close combat or move action dealing no pushing damage, allowing you to replace him with any character with this trait on the same click number. From this first set of boosters, you’d be able to replace him with Ant-Man and Goliath.
His second trait, Ultron’s Father, gives teams that feature Hank a distinct advantage given the contents of the first set of boosters. This power allows friendly characters to modify their attack value by +1 when attacking a character with Ultron in their name, if not already modified by this effect. On top of that, opposing characters with Ultron in their name can’t target Hank unless all friendly characters on the map are named Hank Pym. Given that there are 10 figures in this first series of boosters that feature the name Ultron, chances are you’ll be able to take advantage of this trait on more than one occasion.
We cap things off with our team’s heavy hitter, the Black Panther. A stealthy, indomitable move and attack character, Black Panther isn’t a traditional brick for a team, but with the support from Hank Pym and Protector, his hits and attacks should stick more often than not. Couple that with his own clicks of Leadership, Outwit, and Perplex, and this team is designed to work well together in nearly every situation.
So, there you have it! Our take at a slightly different Avengers team built from characters in the first series of Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP boosters. As a bonus, it also doubles as a Scientist themed team, so you can go that route and sub in characters like M.O.D.A.M., Black Knight, or Hulk amongst others, but this one felt more natural. Let us know what you think, and be sure to share what teams you build from your pulls as we move into the Age of Ultron Storyline OP event. Until next time, regen for the win!
