Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Avengers Strategy Article

Greetings, HeroClix fans!

With the arrival of the  Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline OP event, we wanted to take a step back from our normal previews, and put together an article focused on team building, featuring some of the figures you might not have had a chance to see yet from the first series of booster bricks.

As this is a series of events based around the character Ultron, it’s only logical that his ‘father’, Hank Pym would be a part of the set. In the spirit of Dr. Pym being the creator of Ultron, today we’re going to focus on a team featuring the Avengers keyword!

For team Science Avengers, we start off with Protector, the former Marvel Boy. Playable at 100 points, Protector is six clicks long, and has the Flight ability, with a range of 6 squares with 1 target. His dial, while fairly basic in appearance, has a few notable powers that make him a great team player. To start, he has a special power on his first three clicks called I Am the Protector, which grants him the ability to use Defend and Invulnerability. Coupled with that power, Protector also brings 3 clicks of Probability Control – so sticking him back from frontline attackers means he can share his 18 defense with other ranged attackers, like Hank Pym.

Played at 50 points, Hank Pym has only 3 clicks of life, but a range of 5 clicks with 1 target, and the ever-important Outwit. In addition to that, he also has a special power called Temporal Fixes for the Age of Ultron, which allows him to use Outwit and Probability Control! Not to be outdone, he also carries two traits, both of which give him distinct advantages. The first, Morph: Many Identities allows you to give Hank a close combat or move action dealing no pushing damage, allowing you to replace him with any character with this trait on the same click number. From this first set of boosters, you’d be able to replace him with Ant-Man and Goliath.

His second trait, Ultron’s Father, gives teams that feature Hank a distinct advantage given the contents of the first set of boosters. This power allows friendly characters to modify their attack value by +1 when attacking a character with Ultron in their name, if not already modified by this effect. On top of that, opposing characters with Ultron in their name can’t target Hank unless all friendly characters on the map are named Hank Pym. Given that there are 10 figures in this first series of boosters that feature the name Ultron, chances are you’ll be able to take advantage of this trait on more than one occasion.

We cap things off with our team’s heavy hitter, the Black Panther. A stealthy, indomitable move and attack character, Black Panther isn’t a traditional brick for a team, but with the support from Hank Pym and Protector, his hits and attacks should stick more often than not. Couple that with his own clicks of Leadership, Outwit, and Perplex, and this team is designed to work well together in nearly every situation.

So, there you have it! Our take at a slightly different Avengers team built from characters in the first series of Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP boosters. As a bonus, it also doubles as a Scientist themed team, so you can go that route and sub in characters like M.O.D.A.M., Black Knight, or Hulk amongst others, but this one felt more natural.  Let us know what you think, and be sure to share what teams you build from your pulls as we move into the Age of Ultron Storyline OP event. Until next time, regen for the win!

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Hank Pym & Ant-Man

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

We are pleased to bring you another exciting preview from our upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline Organized Play series, which begins in June and runs for the next four months! The Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline Organized Play series features 56 figures distributed between two waves of tournament boosters.  For today’s preview we take a look at a founding member of the Avengers and the first of several costumed identities he’s used during his heroic (and not-so-heroic) career.  Please welcome Hank Pym and Ant-Man!

First up is Hank Pym, who can be played at either 100 or 50 points and has a range of five squares with one target.  Hank Pym’s 50-point starting line begins on his fourth click.  At both point values Hank Pym hits the battlefield with a pair of traits, Morph: Many Identities and Ultron’s Father.

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Hank Pym

Morph: Many Identities let’s Hank Pym switch to his other costumed identities and reads, “Give Hank Pym a move or close combat action that deals no pushing damageAfter actions resolve, replace him with any character with this trait on the same click numberIf this character started the game on its 50 point starting line, the character it is replaced with can’t be healed past its 50 point starting line.”  Multiple characters from the Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline Organized Play series possess the Morph: Many Identities trait, so choose Hank Pym’s replacement wisely!

Hank Pym’s second trait, Ultron’s Father, grants friendly characters a +1 modifier when attacking a character with “Ultron” in their name.  Additionally, opposing characters with “Ultron” in their name can’t target Hank Pym unless all friendly characters on the map are named Hank Pym.

Moving to Hank Pym’s six-click dial, he has fairly steady defense values and a full run of Energy Shield/Deflection to make him a difficult target against ranged attacks.  In his speed slot he starts with a click of Sidestep, then drops that for Running Shot on his next two clicks.  Sidestep returns for two more clicks before Hank Pym’s dial ends.

Offensively, Hank Pym starts strong with a three-click run of Pulse Wave, with the last two clicks pairing nicely with Running Shot.  The Pulse Wave run is followed by two clicks of Incapacitate.  On his damage track, Hank Pym alternates between a special power called Temporal Fixes for the Age of Ultron and OutwitTemporal Fixes for the Age of Ultron lets Hank Pym use Outwit and Probability Control.

Hank Pym’s Morph: Many Identities trait and dual point costs makes him a fun and easy addition on any force, particularly those which also share either or both of his keywords, Avengers and Scientist.

One of the Morph: Many Identities options available to Hank Pym in the Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline Organized Play series is his first costumed persona, Ant-Man!

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Ant-Man

Like Hank Pym, Ant-Man has point values of 100 and 50, respectively, and the Avengers and Scientist keywords.  Additionally, Ant-Man has an Improved Movement ability called Where’d He Go? which lets him ignore hindering terrain and characters when he moves.

Ant-Man’s power set makes him a close combat annoyance, and the Tiny damage symbol makes him difficult to hit from range for opposing characters and easy to tote around for his teammates.  In close combat, Ant-Man boasts a full dial of Combat Reflexes.

Ant-Man starts his dial with Poison in his attack slot and Exploit Weakness in his damage slot.  This combination of power reappears on clicks 3 and 6.  In Ant-Man’s speed slot is a special power called Temporary Pym Particles which lets him use three popular standard speed powers:  Charge, Sidestep and Stealth.  Are you just a bit out of reach of an opposing character at the start of your turn?  Use a free action to activate Sidestep and move adjacent to that character before triggering Poison.  Additionally, Temporary Pym Particles lets Ant-Man use a free action to help adjacent teammates with the standard damage symbol by giving them either the Tiny or Giant damage symbol until your next turn.

The rest of Ant-Man’s dial is suited for pinging away at opposing characters a click at a time.  On his non-Poison/Exploit Weakness clicks, Ant-Man has Precision Strike and Perplex.  When Ant-Man isn’t using Temporary Pym Particles, he has standard use of Stealth.

That’s all for this sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP!  Stay tuned as we reveal more exciting characters in the days and weeks to come!
