Giant-Size X-Men Action Comes to Toys “R” Us!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Soon, HeroClix fans in select areas all over the country will be able to stroll into their local Toys ‘R’ Us and find something very “X-citing”.  We are very pleased to announce that beginning next week (week of May 15th and forward) there will be three new versions of some very familiar (and COLOSSAL!) figures! That’s right! Giant-Size X-Men colossals have come to Toys ‘R’ Us and they’re taking no prisoners.  With all new dials, point values, and collector numbers, these three colossal figures are a brand new addition to your HeroClix arsenal!

Without further ado, let’s begin with the Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive Sentinel Mark V!

Playable at both the 150 and 300 point values, this version of the Sentinel Mark V is ready to capture and contain the mutant threat!  With consistent combat values and an array of offensive and defensive powers and abilities, your opponents will think twice before tangling with this Sentinel Mark V.

The Coordinated Assault trait is definitely an asset when the Mark V is played as part of a  larger force: the ability to make a free attack against an opposing figure is never to be underestimated! And be sure to also consider the Mark V’s Capture Coils special power when you’re building your force; re-positioning your opponent’s figures mid-battle via a successful ranged combat attack is extremely advantageous.

And let’s not forget the Indomitable ability! Yes indeed, this Mark V Sentinel is ready to bring the fight to the enemy!

Next up is the Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive Sentinel Mark II!

Like the Mark V above, the Sentinel Mark II can be played at two different point values, 100 and 300 points! The Sentinel Mark II has aggressive combat values and an array of great powers and abilities, as well as a slightly longer range (8 as opposed to the Mark V’s 7) with two targets.  Consider also the Indomitable ability and the future’s looking pretty grim for the opposition!

At both point values, the Mark II begins play with the Search and Destroy special power which enables it to not only use Outwit to counter powers on opposing figures, but to also increase its damage dealt with a successful attack by +1 for each action token on the Mark II’s target.

But that’s not all! The Sentinel Mark II also possesses the Coordinated Capture trait which allows it to assist whenever another friendly figure with the Robot keyword makes a successful attack.  If the target of that attack is within 8 squares and has no action tokens when it was attacked, the Mark II allows you to place an action token on that hit figure once actions resolve! Tactically, there are many great uses for this trait and we’re sure the Mark II will be a welcome addition to your robot teams!

Last, and certainly not least, we have the oldest recorded mutant (and someone who should be on every Sentinel’s “hit list”), the Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive Apocalypse!

At 300 points, Apocalypse is a force to be reckoned with! As you could probably anticipate, Apocalypse begins play protected by Impervious and his  Eternal Schemes trait provides some additional incentive for your opponents to not use their Outwit when this ancient mutant is around.  Eternal Schemes places an action token on any opposing figure within 4 squares that uses Outwit, even if they didn’t target Apocalypse himself!

Apocalypse also begins play with the Master Manipultor special power which allows him to use Shape Change and Telekinesis.  That’s not all though, becuase if Apocalypse uses Telekinesis to move an opposing figure and his (successful) attack roll is doubles, Master Manipulator also deals damage equal to Apocalypse’s damage value!

Apocalypse possesses a wide array of offensive powers to target his foes both near and from afar.  With two targets and 7 range, few figures will be able to hide from Apocalypse, and the Indomitable ability allows him to act without fer of pushing damage (so long as he doesn’t already have two tokens on him anyhow)! Mid- and end-dial Regenerate work to keep Apocalypse on the battlefield, while Impervious and Invulnerability absorb some (if not all!) of the damage dealt by your opponent’s figures.

As you can see, these three new colossals are here to fight and can bring some serious firepower to many different strategies.  So where can you find them? Just check below for a full list of all of the Toys ‘R’ Us stores, by state, that will have Apocalypse, the Sentinel Mark II, and the Sentinel Mark V exclusives available for sale:

Don’t Call Them “X-Babies” Anymore!

Hello There HeroClix’ers!

Today’s article comes courtersy of the GenCon 2011 King of the Hill Champion, Stephen Plasco.  Below, Stephen shares with us all the thought and processes that went into the design of his very own Alternate Team Ability:

“After winning the King of the Hill tournament this past year at Gen Con, I knew I wanted to do something around one of my favorite comic books from when I was younger – The New Mutants.  I have always enjoyed the storylines that went along with this group and felt that as characters in HeroClix, they really did not receive enough love and attention, though GSX has certainly helped.  You would almost never see them in a competitive play environment, and they were also one of the rarer teams used with regards to theme teams.  I felt they needed a bit of a boost and an ATA might do just that.

“My original intent on this card was to have it so a character could jump in front of another character and “save” them.  In essence, when a character with the ATA was attacked, and adjacent friendly character with the same ATA could take an action token and become the target of the attack instead (regardless of the legality of the line of fire).  While this was a good idea in theory, in practice it caused a lot of rules issues and would have needed a page of errata in order for it to be used properly.  It just wasn’t feasible for it to be written as simply as I originally envisioned it.  So we simplified the effect a bit, and decided to make it function similar to Mastermind.  Also, wording it so that characters taking the damage could only use the power once per turn was getting both tricky and wordy so we decided to get rid of it.  In reality, a character with zero action tokens jumping around to save his friends twice in a row seems a bit silly, but in terms of game play,  it makes the card a little bit stronger.

“In the end, we decided to word it the way that it is now as to have no confusion on how it worked, but still capture the flavor of one New Mutant sacrificing themselves for another.

“I made a card to utilize the team (s) included correctly and in a fun way, as well as allow wildcards to use it so that it was playable in a competitive environment.  I hope that was accomplished and you all enjoy playing with it, and The New Mutants, in future games.

-Stephen C. Plasco (AKA Logansan)”

Thanks Stephen! Without further adieu, here is the New Mutants alternate team ability:

Thanks for all your hard work Stephen.  As a fellow New Mutants fan I’m very grateful and cannot wait to play this ATA at my Venue’s next tournament!

The New Mutants is our last GSX print and play article, but we will have some exciting articles in the weeks to come so stay tuned and keep on clixin’!

The Age(nts) of Apocalypse

Hello there HeroClix Fans!

Today’s article takes a turn for the darker as we examine the Horsemen of Apocalypse Alternate Team Ability!

Apocalypse has many minions and followers, but the most feared are his Horsemen.  This quartet is dedicated to their master’s tenet of “survival of the fittest” and the boost in attack values this ATA offers allows them to more readily test their opponents!

Of course, this ATA is uncopyble by Wild Cards as Apocalypse doesn’t take just anyone into his fold, let lone the ranks of his esteemed Horsemen, and a +1 one benefit to attack Values may seem minor but at only one point per chracter, this ATA is actually pretty economical.  Sure you may lose it if you do not have the requisite four Horsemen, but Apocalypse is a harsh master and does not reward failure or compromise! If the Horsemen prove unworthy, Apocalypse has no compunctions against removing his favor!

That’s all we have for today, but be sure to join us tomorrow for a very special Alternate Team Ability article penned by our GenCon 2010 King of the Hill winner, Stephen C. Plasco! As many of you may recall, top prize for the Battle Royale events was the opportunity to design an Alternate Team Ability and Stephen’s article will take us behind the scenes to examine both his process and strategy.

We’ll see you all tomorrow! Until then, keep your Clix strong and fighting!

The Reavers are Coming!

Hello there HeroClix’ers!

We continue our GSX print and play experience with the Reavers Alternate Team Ability!

The Reavers have always been dangerous foes for our favorite band of mutants, but this alternate team ability (ATA) increases that danger manyfold! The ability to continually act regardless of action tokens can be incredibly effective and is certainly worth one unavoidable damage, especially if that action allows you to K.O. an opposing figure or puts you on a more useful click!

The Reavers ATA demonstrates how relentless these cybernetic maruaders are, and certainly adds a great deal to their arsenel of options.   Whether they be hunting mutants or establishing their dominance on the battlefield your opponent will think twice before engaging your Reavers!

That’s all we have for today but be sure to check in tomorrow as we continue our x-ploration of the GSX print and play elements!

Announcements Errata Heroclix Rules Question

Normal Distribution – Giant Colossal Size X-Men

Giant Size X-Men is in stores now and boosters are flying off the shelves. Now, you may be one of those folks who enjoys the 5-figure boosters, but for me, I enjoy a game with a gigantic figure on the board. As everyone knows, the Super Boosters have one of 6 colossal figures in it, each one towering over the battlefield.

In any game of HeroClix, actions matter. Whether you are playing 300, 600, 1000 points or more, the number of times per turn that you are doing something matters. Any time that you have can’t do anything with a character, it just feels like you’re missing opportunities. When you are playing with BIG characters that are BIG points, those turns when you have to clear that character feel like you’re about to walk into traffic blind-folded.

To help players understand the rules for damage-colossal figures, I thought a quick review of the Colossal Size rules would be in order. If you are a veteran player, it’s not only good to review, but trust me, you don’t know everything there is to know about this combat ability.

Characters with the damage-standard and damage-giant symbol do not block lines of fire to or from this character.

Colossal figures are the biggest thing on the board and other figures might as well not be there when it comes to drawing lines of fire.

A character with this ability ignores the effects of hindering, elevated, and outdoor blocking terrain on movement.

When a colossal figure moves, the only terrain that slows him down is when he has to move around indoors. Those indoor walls and blocking terrain are a bit of a challenge. Also, remember that inside the figure moving will need an opening as wide as the character’s base. So those big bases might need to blow out some walls if they want to get where they want to go.

This character can’t be knocked back and can make ranged combat attacks against non-adjacent opposing characters when they are adjacent to opposing characters.

The knock back part is easy enough, in fact it applies to all multi-base characters. The ranged combat attack is sometimes confusing to people. Normally, a character that is adjacent to an opposing character is prohibited from making ranged attacks. There are some ways around this, such as the Sharpshooter combat ability, but in that case, the ranged attack that the character is allowed to make is still not allowed to be against a non-adjacent target. So when Cyclops is adjacent to The Hellfire Guard, the X-Men leader can still make ranged attacks against The Hellfire Guard, for example, using his Range Combat Expert. But The Hellfire Guard’s boss Magneto few squares away doesn’t have to worry about Cyclops… yet. This is not true if you replace Cyclops, with say, Apocalypse – who happens to be holding a slightly crushed Cyclops, so I think that would be a fair swap.

Colossal figures, like Apocalypse, can make ranged attacks against all non-adjacent characters. Naturally, they still need line of fire and the character needs to be within range. What’s interesting is that, unlike the Sharpshooter, they can’t make ranged attacks against the opposing characters that are adjacent to them, only the ones that are not adjacent. (They have no problems making close combat attacks against those characters though – that’s usually plenty!)

This character and a character on elevated terrain draw line of fire and make ranged combat attacks against each other as if they were both elevated, but terrain effects still apply normally. This character can make close combat attacks against elevated characters, even when this character is grounded.

These lines are just like the rules for damage-giant characters. A character on elevated terrain would not need to be “on the rim” in order to be able to draw a line of fire to a damage-colossal character, as they can treat the damage-colossal character as if it was elevated (and vice versa). Close combat isn’t a problem across elevation either, as a grounded damage-colossal character can do so regardless of the targets elevation. If the damage-colossal character itself is elevated, while it’s free to make close combat against other elevated characters, it would not be able to make close combat attacks against grounded characters, at least, not through this ability.

This ability can’t be countered.

No one should have any trouble with this line, eh? No outwitting a Colossal Size. What are you going to do, squeeze the Frost Giant into a smaller box?

Now, wasn’t there something new that I was promised earlier? Something to take the edge off of players who hate giving up their turn when they’ve invested 500 points in that one big figure?

When this character has two action tokens, it can be given a non-free action. After the action resolves, deal it 1 unavoidable damage and do not remove action tokens from it at the end of the turn.

You read that right. Colossal characters used in a force – all of them, not just the ones in the Giant Size X-Men Super Boosters – can now be given an action every single turn as a bonus for having the damage-colossal damage symbol. It costs you, to be sure. But as the player, you can now make the choice.

Let’s review this ability in a little detail so that it’s clear how pushing damage and willpower come into play.

It’s round 1 and I need to decide what I’m going to do with my Apocalypse. He’s on his first click, sporting a 10 speed with Charge and 5 damage with Close Combat Expert. I move him the full 10 squares with a standard move action and place a token on him.

On round 2, I see that I have an opposing character just a few squares away. I give him a power action to Charge and he attacks the opposing character, dealing 5 damage! When Apocalypse gets assigned a second action token, he is dealt pushing damage. If he did not have Indomitable, he’d be taking a click of damage himself. But thanks to Indomitable, he can ignore pushing damage and end his turn.

On round 3, Apocalypse is sitting there with 2 tokens. Under previous rules, this would the time when the opponent would come in at Apocalypse full force. They’d be able to attack him knowing that Apocalypse would be powerless to retaliate. To be sure, players still have that option. If you want your Colossal character to rest and clear tokens, that’s a choice you can make.

With the new ability in Colossal Size, opposing characters can never rest easy again. On turn 3, Apocalypse can be given a non-free action. Since he has 2 tokens, he is not assigned a third one. And after the action resolves, he’ll be dealt 1 unavoidable damage. This is different from pushing damage – Indomitable isn’t going to help him this time. What’s more, Apocalypse does not get to clear this turn. So, during round 4, Apocalypse’s player can make the choice again – rest Apocalypse so that he can be given actions that do not cause damage or give him another non-free action, attempt to decimate his opponent, but give Apocalypse another unavoidable click.

It may become a tough choice at times, but you’ll find your damage-colossal figures will be having a better time decimating the opposition!

Giant Size X-Men is on sale now. The colossal figures are in the super booster. I mean, of course that’s where they are – how else are you going to fit that much fun in a box?

Giant-Size X-Men Heroclix Preview

Islands of Adventure!

Good Day HeroClix Fans!

Today we bring you to distant lands full of mystery, intrigue, and most of all–BATTLE!

We begin our preview with none other than Madripoor Lowtown:

Lowtown is every bit as treacherous as its reputation would have you believe.  Narrow alleys, dark rooftops, and mysterious ships docked on the waterfront all add to the ambience of this remote and deadly city.

Starting areas can be found in opposing corners of this map and both benefit from cover provided by blocking terrain.  From there, teams will have to navigate between buildings (such as the infamous Princess Bar) as well as manuever around hindering terrain such as rickshaws and cargo piles.

With all of the non-clear terrain on this map, your figures  may have a difficult time drawing an unhindered Line of Fire against opposing pieces more than a handful of squares away (especially if the targetted pieces have access to Stealth).

With only one rooftop providing elevated terrain, fighting may be fierce for the high ground as your forces compete for a (somewhat) less obstructed view of the battlemap.

And while there is some aquatic terrain on this map, players need not concern themselves too much with Atlantean invaders.  (That is, unless those same aquatic warriors bring along some special objects that bring the water terrain inland, know any?)

Of course, close combat pieces will feel at home in the rough and tumble alleys of Lowtown, where brawls and melees are as common as dark deals.  Madripoor Lowtown is situated perfectly for charging into adjcency against opposing figures!

Next up, we have the sentient and deadly island-foe of the X-Men, Krakoa:

Krakoa’s beauty is only matched by the danger! This island paradise hides a sinister secret beneath its lush, tropical facade.

Let’s take a look at Krakoa’s special rules:

Special Rules:  The orange squares are Krakoa nerve center squares.  They act as blocking terrain but can’t be destroyed.  “The Living Island”:  At the end of your turn, roll a d6.

On a result of 1-3: Nothing happens.

On a result of 4: EARTHQUAKE.  Each character is dealt 1 damage.

On a result of 5: SHIFTING FOLIAGE.  Printed hindering terrain acts as blocking terrain instead until the beginning of your next turn.  Characters occupying those squares take 1 unavoidable damage and are placed in the owner’s starting area.

On a result of 6: THE ISLAND AWAKES.  The Krakoa nerve center in the orange squares makes an 8 range, 10 attack, 3 damage ranged attack against an opposing character of your choice.  The line of fire for this attack ignores hindering terrain and elevation.

Krakoa is definitely a dangerous battleground in the Modern Age tournament environment, but it’s even more so in the Golden Age environment.  Play the Krakoa the Living Island Battlefield Condition and the danger increases even more!

This BFC from Mutations and Monsters states: “Once at the end of each player’s turn, he or she can choose a target opposing character adjacent to an unoccupied square of outdoor hindering, blocking, or elevated terrain, and make an attack roll with an attack value of 9 and a damage value of 2 against the target; the target can’t be knocked back by the attack. If the attack succeeds but the character target takes no damage from the attack and has zero or one action token, give the target an action token.”

Combined these two elements will make for a very interesting game for you and your opponent as you not only battle it out against each other, but against the island itself!

That wraps up our Giant-Size X-Men map previews.  Join us later as we check in with the winning result of the recent HeroClix World Players Choice poll!

Giant-Size X-Men Heroclix Preview

Hello there HeroClixer’s!

Today’s previews are enhanced with all sorts of combat-ready goodies.  We start the day off with an Omega Prime Sentinel-turned X-Ally-turned Marauder, Karima!

Karima is definitely ready to bring the fight to the enemy.  Early-dial Running Shot and an 8 Range allows her to move into position, and while on the way to set up the shot, Karima can pick up an object with Super Strength for an up close and personal special delivery.  Shape Change gives her that additional edge should your opponent attempt to target her, and if an attack gets past her disguise, her Invulnerability will protect her.

Mid-dial Karima switches tactics somewhat and trades Super Strength for Penetrating/Psychic Blast and also picks up some handy Force Blast to keep your foes at bay (and set them up for nice ranged attacks).  Toughness continues to afford some protection against opponents’ attacks as well.

Karima’s end-dial represents her short run as a member of the Maruaders while possessed by Malice.  She adds Mind Control to her arsenal and Pulse Wave ensures Karima remains a deadly threat.  Lastly, Regeneration allows Karima the opportunity to get back up to her early-dial.

At 118 points with consistent combat values, the Indomitable ability, a host of useful keywords and dual Police and X-Men team abilities, Karima will be a very useful addition to your X-collection!

Next up we have the time-travelling Askani’son himself, Cable!

At 140 points, Cable is certainly ready to join the fight.  Striking from the shadows with some opening clicks of Stealth, Cable demonstrates his proficiency with firearms with Ranged Combat ExpertStealth gives way to Charge and Cable picks up Close Combat Expert as he moves in for the melee.

Early-dial Toughness protects Cable from some harm, and mid-dial Regeneration allows Cable to potentially return to his first click.  However, should Cable choose to not heal, he will find that he will undergo a fantastic transformation!

Charge gives way to Hypersonic Speed as Cable takes on a whole new persona via his Lord Protector of Providence special power which allows use of Barrier, Defend, Leadership, and the Flight ability! If that weren’t enough, Penetrating/Psychic Blast and Impervious ensure that Cable will be deadly, enduring threat on the battlemap.

Hypersonic Speed gives way to Phase/Teleport allowing Cable to continue to move freely on the map, while Impervious is traded for Invunerability on the end-dial.

Aggressive combat values and an impressive power selection makes Cable a very potent addition to any force.  And his keyword selection allows Cable to theme on a number of impressive rosters!

We hope you’ve enjoyed today’s previews as much as we.  Next up we will hand another double-preview as we preview the Giant-Size X-Men maps as well as a special bonus preview resulting from the recent HeroClix World players’ choice poll! We were pleasantly surprised to see who you selected, and we’re sure you’ll be happy with the winner as well.  Until Friday, keep those dials a-clixin’!

Uncanny X-Force!

Hello there fellow HeroClix fans!

Today we have a special double preview as we take our first sneak peek at the Organized Play (OP) kit for Giant-Size X-Men.  We begin our OP kit explorations with Deadpool!

It’s great to see Deadpool in his X-Force uniform and he certainly brings an arsenel of explosive one-liners and witty weapons.  His dial opens with Stealth (as he sneaks-sneaks-sneaks around), Toughness, and his New Writer special power that allows you to add a little deus ex machina to your games by choosing the power set that will help you out the most during your game.

Stealth gives way to Running Shot as Deadpool leaves the comfort of shadows for a full-frontal assualt, while Toughness gives way to some early-dial Regeneration (handy to get back up to those first clicks), and Perplex allows him to add that little bit of extra help where it’s needed most.

Deadpool’s late-dial brings Charge and then Phasing/Teleport as well as some Blades/Claws/Fangs to the battlemap and Regeneration makes another appearance as well.  However, if Regeneration isn’t sufficient to get Deadpool’s dial to where you want it, there’s always his X-Men team ability which allows you to share clicks of health with other figures with the team ability.

Lastly, Deadpool’s trait allows him to ignore the effects of Poison, Mind Control, and Penetrating/Psychic Blast.  Combined with consistent combat values and a great power selection, Deadpool will make a very useful addition to your next X-Force!

Next up, we have Deadpool’s (hotly anticipated)  teammate, Archangel!

Archangel joins his X-Force comrades striking from the shadows with early-dial Stealth.  If your opponent tries to base Archangel, their figure must then contend with Warren’s Combat Reflexes and Quake, hardly an incentive to engage in close combat!

Archangel’s mid-dial gives him access to his Razor Wings special power which allows Archangel to use Blades/Claws/Fangs while using Hypersonic SpeedCombat Reflexes gives way to Toughness as Running Shot and Incapacitate demonstrate Archangel’s paralytic “move and strike” techniques.

Finally, late-dial Regenerate and the X-Men team ability allow you to continually get Archangel to where he’ll do the most good.  With proper planning, one can almost always manipulate Archangel’s dial to the most useful spots at any given time!

With the countdown to just over a week, we’ll be bringing you more X-citing OP elements in the days to come.  Be sure to join us later this week for more previews and join us in anticipation to the release of Marvel HeroClix’s next great expansion, Giant-Size X-Men!
