Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP – Atlas & Goliath

Greetings HeroClix Fans! Civil War is upon us!  Beginning June 1st HeroClix venues all over the world will kick off the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play. Choose your side, whether you stand with Tony Stark on the Pro-Registration side -or- with Captain America on the Anti-Registration side, both teams are equally balanced and ready to play.  It is up to you (and your dice) to decide who is victorious!

Today’s preview of the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP gives you a taste of that balance as we look at team members on each side of the conflict. Two heroes who have to shop the ‘Big and Tall’ section for new suits, Atlas & Goliath!

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP - Atlas

Co-opted by the government as part of the Thunderbolts team of (semi) reformed super powered criminals, Atlas represents the Pro-Registration forces supporting Iron Man.  At 90 points, Atlas provides a strong backbone for your team.  With abilities provided by the Indomitable defense symbol, the Giant damage symbol, and the Masters of Evil team ability, he can keep moving and keep hitting whenever you need to dish out damage. There is a good chance he will always have something close by to hit with the Giant Reach ability. He has movement options at every position on his dial with a starting click of Charge, two clicks of a special movement power Just Like When We Invaded the Mansion that lets him use Flurry and Sidestep, and when using Flurry he can place any hit characters adjacent to him after the action ends, and then he finishes with regular Sidestep.  With some Quake and Close Combat Expert, on attack and damage respectively, he can be useful for hitting multiple targets or singling out just one.  His attack stays at a consistent 10 with a little rise at the end and his damage never drops below 3.  Atlas is also sturdy enough to take some heavy hits with Impervious, Invulnerability, and Toughness for damage reduction on every click.  He also works as a team player with the Justice Like Lightning trait that is also featured on the other Thunderbolts members in this set, which gives him the chance to remove an action token from a friendly character with the Thunderbolts keyword within 4 squares whenever he damages one or more characters with an attack.  Now let’s see who he will likely be grappling with on the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War battlefield.

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP - Goliath

Matching Atlas at 90 points, Goliath sports the Indomitable and Giant Size abilities for Captain America’s Anti-Registration faction.  He also has the Defenders team ability to share his healthy starting 18 defense value with other Defenders or Wild Card characters.  As more of a traditional heavy hitter, Goliath strides ahead at the opposition with Charge and Super Strength, switching over to Sidestep and Close Combat Expert mid dial.  He finishes with higher attack and damage values as a last ditch effort to help his team, with the Get Ready for the Shortest Comeback in History that lets him use Charge without reducing his speed value by half.  If Goliath falls in clix combat just as he did in the comics his trait, A Hero Remembered will trigger and result in a click of healing for the rest of his teammates, and the use of Sidestep if he is KO’d during your opponent’s turn.  His defensive line of Invincible, Invulnerability, and Toughness should keep you from seeing his KO clicks too early though.

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Goliath

HeroClix Fans!

Thanks for joining us again as we bring you another exciting preview from our upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline Organized Play series!  Today we take a look at another of Hank Pym’s costumed identities, this one following his stint as Giant-Man.  Please welcome Goliath!

Goliath can be played at 140, 100 or 50 points and has the Morph: Many Identities trait that both Hank Pym and Ant-Man possess.  You’ll want to note that Goliath’s version of Morph: Many Identities has an additional sentence which requires you to use his blue click numbers for the trait.

Here’s Goliath’s character card and dial:

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Goliath

Now, let’s take a closer look at Goliath’s second trait, Enhanced Growth Potential, and his special power, Trample.

The first sentence of Enhanced Growth Potential reads, “Give Goliath a free action and until your next turn he has .”  Goliath normally has the  damage combat symbol, which lets him use the Giant Reach and Great Size abilities.  For newer HeroClix players, Giant Reach lets Goliath use the Carry ability and it adds 1 to its d6 roll when breaking away.  Additionally, when Goliath is given an action that includes a close combat attack, all squares within line of fire and a range of 2 are considered adjacent.

With Enhanced Growth Potential, Goliath can replace his  damage combat symbol with the  damage symbol, which drops Giant Reach and adds the Colossal Stamina ability.  With Colossal Stamina, Goliath automatically breaks away and can make ranged combat attacks against any opposing characters within range and line of fire, even if those characters are in adjacent squares.  Additionally, when Goliath has two action tokens Colossal Stamina allows him to still be given a non-free action; however, after actions resolve he’ll be dealt 1 unavoidable damage and does not clear action tokens at the end of the turn.

The second sentence of Enhanced Growth Potential reads, “When he does and he makes a close combat attack, he considers all squares within 3 squares and line of fire as adjacent.”  This improves upon the condition in Giant Reach that allows Goliath to treat all squares within line of fire and a range of 2 as adjacent when making close combat attacks by extending the effect to 3 squares.  This addition to Enhanced Growth Potential will come in handy as we move to our breakdown of Goliath’s Trample special power.

Trample appears in the speed slot on clicks 1, 3 and 4 of Goliath’s dial.  The first sentence reads, “Goliath can use Charge.”  On Goliath’s Trample clicks, his speed value is either 10 or 9, so his Charge movement will be five squares.  If you give Goliath a free action through Enhanced Growth Potential to replace his  damage combat symbol to the  damage symbol prior to using Charge, after he halves his movement he may then make a close combat attack and treat all squares within 3 squares and line of fire as adjacent.

But wait, there’s more with Trample!  The second sentence reads, “When he does and moves in a direct line, after actions resolve, he may make an additional close combat attack targeting all opposing characters whose square he moved through but didn’t already target with an attack this turn.”  The Great Size ability, which is granted by the  and  damage combat symbols, lets characters ignore opposing characters’ Plasticity.  It also lets them ignore elevated terrain, hindering terrain, outdoor blocking terrain when moving, and they may move through squares adjacent to or occupied by opposing characters.  With Trample, if Goliath moves in a direct line and there were opposing characters in his path, after actions resolve he may make an additional close combat attack targeting all those characters if he didn’t already target them with an attack this turn.

Finally, the last line of Trample reads, “For this attack, each hit character is dealt 3 damage.”  Super Strength is paired with Trample on Goliath’s dial so the main target of your Charge attack can eat some extra damage if you hit with an object.  However, the opposing characters in Goliath’s Trample path will only be dealt 3 damage, which is still enough to get through most damage-reducing powers.

Goliath is included in the first wave of Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron tournament boosters and should be a welcome addition to any force, particularly those that are built around the Avengers and/or Scientist keywords.  Goliath is a nice option for players who wish to take advantage of the Morph: Many Identities trait and should knock around plenty of opponents with his Enhanced Growth Potential trait and Trample special power.

That’s all for this sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP set!  Stay tuned as we reveal more exciting characters in the days and weeks to come!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Black Widow & Goliath

Greetings, HeroClix fans, and welcome to a special peek at some of the incredible Chase figures we have coming up in the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set! Throughout the history of the Avengers, many heroes have come and gone, and many have been a part of the team under a variety of guises and power sets. Hank Pym could field the starting 5 of a basketball team on his own! In the spirit of these heroes taking on different identities, our chases explore some of the signature alternate appearances of some of the most popular members of the team! Today, we’re going to take a look at the alternate identities of two Secret Avengers, Black Widow and Hawke…er…we mean, Goliath!

 Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Goliath

Goliath is a 98 point indomitable behemoth, who has the unique ability via his trait Baack to the Blond-Haired Bowslinger Named Hawkeye! to switch between his gargantuan likeness and the more familiar purple duds of everyone’s favorite avenging archer. This can be done via free action, as long as the replacement is named Hawkeye of equal or less points. The character in question gets placed on their same click number minus 3, to a minimum of 1.  He also has a couple of signature special powers of someone of giant size, one on his attack called Growing Larger, which allows Goliath the ability to use Quake. Additionally, when he makes a close combat attack, all characters within 4 squares and line of fire are considered adjacent! Coupled with that for two clicks is his special damage power Ground Squash, which states that characters hit by his attacks can’t automatically break away, in addition to modifying their break away rolls by -1 until your next turn! He’s not afraid to put the boot down and put enemies in their place! Goliath also comes with a myriad of other powers you’d expect from a giant sized character, including Charge, Super Strength, and Invulnerability, amongst others.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Black Widow Chase

Black Widow eschews her normal archetype with her Asgardian form, hoisting mighty Mjolnir in an attempt to drive back the oncoming storm! First appearing in What If? Age of Ultron #3, this version of the Black Widow is amped up to 11 (on her attack at least!), with the powers of a Norse god to go along with her already brilliant tactical mind. To start, she’s a 200-point indomitable powerhouse, sporting a range of 7 squares with 2 targets. She has a trait called Dark Clouds & Dirty Tricks, which grants her the continued use of Stealth. In addition to that, she can also be given a free action, allowing her to place 2 hindering terrain markers – one in the square she currently occupies, and another within range and line of fire. These two markers will remain on the map until she uses this ability to place markers again. She also has a special defensive power called We’re the Sacrifice – We Will Save the Rest of the Universe granting her Combat Reflexes and Toughness. And, when any other friendly character is KO’d by an opposing character, you may then heal Black Widow of 2 clicks of life.

Truly, the Black Widow in possession of the hammer of Thor is a terrifying force for enemies of the Avengers to oppose! Running Shot, Energy Explosion, Invincible, and Ranged Combat Expert represent her godlike powers, alongside many others. In addition to both Asgardian and Avengers themed teams, Black Widow can also be a part of a Deity or Spy themed team.

That’s it for today, HeroClix fans! Stay tuned, as we’ll be diving deeper into the chases for the Avengers Assemble set soon!
