Marvel HeroClix: The Uncanny X-Men

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men – Giant-Size X-Men Team Building

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

We hope you’ve been enjoying our series of previews for the Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men set and were able to participate in our Pre-Release events. If you missed out on the Pre-Release events, we encourage you to find Organized Play tournaments at a venue near you by visiting the WizKids Info Network.

Today, we’re pleased to present to you a Giant-Size X-Men Team Building exercise where we’ll create a senses-shattering 300-point force that includes characters featured on the cover of the Giant-Size X-Men #1! By design, each member of our force has a point value of 50, which lets us field an even, no-nonsense team of six characters on the battlefield. Each character on our force also has a trait called All-New, All-Different X-Men, which boosts a character’s combat values (except for damage) by +1 until your next turn when it is healed by the X-Men team ability. All-New, All-Different X-Men is a Unique Modifier, which means a character’s combat values can’t be modified more than once through the trait’s effect.

The first member of our Giant-Size X-Men force is the Bavarian teleporter, Nightcrawler! Like the rest of his teammates on this force, Nightcrawler has the X-Men team ability and keyword. He also has the Martial Artist keyword to offer you an additional option for themed team building. Nightcrawler’s role on your force is to roam the map, tying up opposing characters and making attacks as needed. To help him do this, his dial features a special power called *BAMF* which lets you place him in any square within his line of fire. If that square is within four squares of the one in which he began his action, he may then make a close attack. Precision Strike allows Nightcrawler to get some of the damage he deals past opposing defenses. The rest of Nightcrawler’s dial features standard powers that make him difficult to hit or pin down: Phasing/Teleport, Combat Reflexes, Super Senses, and Shape Change.

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men - Giant-Size X-Men - Nightcrawler

Charging in next to Nightcrawler on the cover of Giant-Size X-Men #1 is Thunderbird! Playing the role of tertiary attacker on your force, Thunderbird begins play with a trait called His Death Remembered, which can either heal his teammates 1 click or modify their combat values by +1 until the end of your next turn when he is KO’d. Thunderbird’s specialty is close combat so his power set includes Sidestep, Charge, Super Strength, Toughness, Willpower, and Close Combat Expert. (Spoiler Alert) Thunderbird died on the new X-Men team’s second mission so to represent his sacrifice, he has a special power late in his dial called Punching a Fighter Jet. This power lets Thunderbird use Exploit Weakness, but when he does, he’s KO’ed after actions resolve. Punching a Fighter Jet is paired with Super Strength on Thunderbird’s dial so his damage output late in the game makes him a formidable opponent. In addition to the X-Men team ability and keyword, Thunderbird has the Soldier keyword.

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men - Giant-Size X-Men - Thunderbird

Next up on our force is the X-Men’s big bruiser, Colossus! Colossus’ dial features only standard powers but his power layout is aggressive, with Charge, Super Strength, Invincible and high attack values to start things out. The rest of his dial is rounded out with Sidestep, Invulnerability and Toughness. Colossus has consistent damage values and the rest of his combat numbers are steady as well. Make sure to keep light and heavy objects within Colossus’ reach early in the game to take advantage of his top-click combination of Charge and Super Strength and dish out extra damage. Like Nightcrawler and Thunderbird, Colossus has the X-Men team ability and keyword. His secondary keyword is Armor.

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men - Giant-Size X-Men - Colossus

So far, each member of our Giant-Size X-Men force has been a close combatant. Our next member, Storm, gives our team some ranged punch. Storm can shoot a single target up to six squares away. Our previous three team members have the standard speed, attack, defense and damage symbols. Storm breaks that trend by having the wing speed symbol, which lets her use the Flight and Carry abilities. Storm’s dial is highlighted by a special power called Localized Weather, which lets her use Smoke Cloud as a free action. Localized Weather is paired on Storm’s dial with Stealth, making her a difficult target for opponents to draw lines of fire. The rest of Storm’s dial features Sidestep, Pulse Wave, Perplex and Energy Shield/Deflection. Deity is Storm’s secondary keyword.

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men - Giant-Size X-Men - Storm

Sticking with characters that can shoot, we’ve come to the X-Men’s field leader, Cyclops! The leader of our force, Cyclops can shoot a single target up to seven squares away and comes into play with a trait called Field Leader of the X-Men, which lets him use Leadership. Additionally, if he uses Leadership and succeeds, he can use Probability Control until your next turn. Cyclops’ power set reflects his ability to shoot and features Ranged Combat Expert, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, and Running Shot. Sidestep helps him stay on the move while Willpower keeps him from taking pushing damage. Cyclops has a consistent set of combat values which see a slight uptick offensively toward the end of his dial.

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men - Giant-Size X-Men - Cyclops

X-Men is the only keyword available to Cyclops, but that’s not the case with the final member of our force, Wolverine! Like the rest of his teammates, Wolverine has the X-Men team ability and keyword. Additionally, he has the Alpha Flight and Weapon X keywords. Wolverine’s main mutant powers, his adamantium claws and healing factor, are showcased on his dial through Blades/Claws/Fangs on each of his clicks and a trait, appropriately called Healing Factor, which lets him heal a click when he clears action tokens. Wolverine becomes more wild and aggressive as the game progresses, thanks to a power set that includes Charge, Flurry, Combat Reflexes, Toughness and Battle Fury. His speed, defense and damage values take a dip toward the end of his dial but his attack values see a significant increase. Wolverine’s potential damage output makes him a vital part of this force, and he should see plenty of play on other teams as well.

Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men - Giant-Size X-Men - Wolverine

And there you have it! Our Giant-Size X-Men team should be a viable force in both constructed and sealed play, and will hopefully earn you points among your peers in the comic accuracy and fun departments. Let Colossus, Wolverine and Thunderbird handle all your heavy hitting up front while Storm and Cyclops hang back and shoot. Meanwhile, Nightcrawler can play tie-up and attack as needed.

Thanks for reading! Join us again as we highlight more strategies and team builds from the Marvel HeroClix: Uncanny X-Men set!

Marvel HeroClix: Wolverine and the X-Men Preview

Marvel HeroClix Wolverine and the X-Men: Hope Summers!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

We are pleased to bring you our X-citing final preview from the Marvel HeroClix: Wolverine and the X-Men set with a look at the first mutant born since M-Day, the event that stripped most of the mutant population.  Some consider her the savior of homo superior while others fear she is a harbinger of destruction.  Most know her simply as Hope Summers!

Hope Summers comes in at 75 points and her first click is unassuming, with Energy Shield/Deflection making her difficult to hit with ranged attacks and Perplex allowing her to modify combat values within her range of six squares.  This combination of defense and damage powers stay on Hope Summers’ dial for her first three clicks.

Once Hope Summers is off her top click, Energy Shield/Deflection and Perplex remain but her mutant powers emerge as gains Running ShotHope Summers also gains a special power called Omega-Level Mutant, which represents her primary mutant ability to mimic the powers of those around her.  Omega-Level Mutant lets Hope Summers take a free action and then use the powers of one chosen adjacent character until your next turn.  Omega-Level Mutant appears in Hope Summers’ attack slot for the remainder of her dial.

As we move to the back half of Hope Summers’ dial, we see that Running Shot returns.  A short run of Combat Reflexes represents Hope Summers’ survival training with Cable.  Another key power possessed by Hope Summers is the ability kick-start the newly emerging powers of other mutants.  In Hope Summers’ damage slot, this is represented as a special power called Mutant Jump Start, which lets her use Empower and Enhancement and modifies the attack values by +1 of adjacent friendly characters with the X-Men keyword.

Speaking of keywords, Hope Summers has the X-Men keyword as well as Future, Generation X and Phoenix Force.

Since we’re currently in the middle of Marvel HeroClix: Fear Itself Organized Play series, we can easily form a 300-point team from the comic series that involves Hope Summers.  First, we can add Cyclops (#008) from the Marvel HeroClix: Giant-Size X-Men set.  They both share the X-Men keyword, which allows Cyclops to take advantage of the +1 attack value modifier from Hope SummersMutant Jump Start.

With Hope Summers at 75 points and Cyclops at 110 points, we’ve still got 115 points to spare!

During the Fear Itself storyline, Cyclops gave Hope Summers his approval to use the powers from any of the mutants on Utopia Island as part of his plan to stop Kuurth (Breaker of Stone) from destroying San Francisco.  For the next member of our 300-point force, we can add Emma Frost (#014) from the Marvel HeroClix: 10th Anniversary set.  Emma Frost’s power set include Mind Control, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, Super Senses and Outwit, all of which should come in handy for Hope Summers to use with Omega-Level MutantEmma Frost also has the X-Men keyword and comes in at 114 points, leaving us at 299 points for our total build.

That’s all for now!  We hope you enjoyed our series of previews for the Marvel HeroClix: Wolverine and the X-Men set, which releases in stores on August 21.  Please join us again as we uncover more secrets from upcoming HeroClix sets!  Until then, may your Impervious rolls be ever in your favor!

HeroClix On the Road 2012 – Apocalypse

Greetings WizKids Fans and Supporters!

Survive, that’s always the goal of another convention season because of the long days and nights.  There is always so much to do during a convention between the show floor and hanging out with friends after hours.  Or is your goal to survive the tourneys and become the HeroClix National Champion at Origins Game Fair?  Our premiere 2012 HeroClix convention preview begins with the first mutant who believes in the tenet of survival of the fittest and is none other than Apocalypse.

En Sabah Nur (as Apocalypse is otherwise known) has survived for over 5000 years by sometimes hiding in the shadows as represented by his Centuries of Waiting power (Stealth).  During this time, he has changed the course of history by plotting and scheming to get his desired outcome.  By using his Manipulate Hundreds of Generations special power, you can change the course of battle by outwitting an opponent’s defense and then making sure your attacks hit home by perplexing up your attack value.  If Apocalypse’s schemes fail him, he can Mass Increase and turn into a Colossal figure to crush any who would defy him!  Of course, Apocalypse also brings with him his Horsemen of Apocalypse and you can too if you team him with Famine, Pestilence, and War from last convention season.  Pair these figures up with the Horseman of Apocalypse ATA and regardless of how many of the Horsemen fall to your opponents, you still get your attack bonus.

Origins Game Fair is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at Gen Con Indy.  With Apocalypse by your side, will you be the next HeroClix National Champion?  Or will fate be against you?  Tune in next week for another exciting preview!

Giant-Size Action Returns to Toys R Us, Part II!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Set your “way back machine” to September 23rd, 2011; we announced that three new colossal figures would be making their way into Toys R Us stores.   However, we did not announce “when” or “where” these figures could be found.  We are pleased to share with you all that “when” is any time now and “where” is your local Toys R Us here in the United States as well as online.

As with all mass market releases, it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific date when the next wave of TRU colossal figures will be hitting the shelves of your local TRU, but we estimate that it will be anytime within the next two weeks.

As we’ve mentioned in the past,  we’re happy to partner once again with Toys ‘R’ Us.  Thank you one and all for your continued support!

Giant-Size Action Returns to Toys ‘R’ Us!

Greetings Heroclix Fans!

Back in May we announced the release of three Colossals to Toys ‘R’ Us and the response was overwhelming! We’re pleased to share with you all that three new colossal offerings will be available in Toys ‘R’ Us beginning in November 2011. And like the previous colossals released through Toys ‘R’ Us, these figures will feature familiar sculpts but all-new dials!

Without further ado, here is the Frost Warrior:

The Frost Warrior can be played at either 250 or 100 point values and is an impressive addition to your force.  With some familiar Keywords, aggressive combat values and an extremely useful power selection, the Frost Warrior is sure to give opposing figures the “cold shoulder”!

Next we have a new take on Nemesis!

Unlike his more expensive forebear, this Nemesis canbe played at either the 300 or 200 point level, offering greater flexibility in your team builds! As with the Frost Warrior above, Nemesis displays some very familiar Keywords and sports an impressive array of powers and combat values, and is a viable alternative when you’ve not enough points for the 400 point version!

Last but certainly not least, we have Onslaught!

Onslaught is designed with the same philosophy as the Frost Warrior and Nemesis above; multiple point values to maximize team building potential! This Onslaught may not have the team abilities of the original, but what he lacks in that arena he more than makes up for it with an aggressive dial design!

Again, all three of these new colossals will be available at Toys ‘R’ Us this November.  We’re happy to partner once again with Toys ‘R’ Us and look forward to potentially offering these figures in the core hobby market as well.  We will consider an additional print run for the core hobby market should the response be as overwhelming  as it was with the first wave of “TRU Colossals” .

Giant-Size X-Men Action Comes to Toys “R” Us!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Soon, HeroClix fans in select areas all over the country will be able to stroll into their local Toys ‘R’ Us and find something very “X-citing”.  We are very pleased to announce that beginning next week (week of May 15th and forward) there will be three new versions of some very familiar (and COLOSSAL!) figures! That’s right! Giant-Size X-Men colossals have come to Toys ‘R’ Us and they’re taking no prisoners.  With all new dials, point values, and collector numbers, these three colossal figures are a brand new addition to your HeroClix arsenal!

Without further ado, let’s begin with the Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive Sentinel Mark V!

Playable at both the 150 and 300 point values, this version of the Sentinel Mark V is ready to capture and contain the mutant threat!  With consistent combat values and an array of offensive and defensive powers and abilities, your opponents will think twice before tangling with this Sentinel Mark V.

The Coordinated Assault trait is definitely an asset when the Mark V is played as part of a  larger force: the ability to make a free attack against an opposing figure is never to be underestimated! And be sure to also consider the Mark V’s Capture Coils special power when you’re building your force; re-positioning your opponent’s figures mid-battle via a successful ranged combat attack is extremely advantageous.

And let’s not forget the Indomitable ability! Yes indeed, this Mark V Sentinel is ready to bring the fight to the enemy!

Next up is the Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive Sentinel Mark II!

Like the Mark V above, the Sentinel Mark II can be played at two different point values, 100 and 300 points! The Sentinel Mark II has aggressive combat values and an array of great powers and abilities, as well as a slightly longer range (8 as opposed to the Mark V’s 7) with two targets.  Consider also the Indomitable ability and the future’s looking pretty grim for the opposition!

At both point values, the Mark II begins play with the Search and Destroy special power which enables it to not only use Outwit to counter powers on opposing figures, but to also increase its damage dealt with a successful attack by +1 for each action token on the Mark II’s target.

But that’s not all! The Sentinel Mark II also possesses the Coordinated Capture trait which allows it to assist whenever another friendly figure with the Robot keyword makes a successful attack.  If the target of that attack is within 8 squares and has no action tokens when it was attacked, the Mark II allows you to place an action token on that hit figure once actions resolve! Tactically, there are many great uses for this trait and we’re sure the Mark II will be a welcome addition to your robot teams!

Last, and certainly not least, we have the oldest recorded mutant (and someone who should be on every Sentinel’s “hit list”), the Toys ‘R’ Us exclusive Apocalypse!

At 300 points, Apocalypse is a force to be reckoned with! As you could probably anticipate, Apocalypse begins play protected by Impervious and his  Eternal Schemes trait provides some additional incentive for your opponents to not use their Outwit when this ancient mutant is around.  Eternal Schemes places an action token on any opposing figure within 4 squares that uses Outwit, even if they didn’t target Apocalypse himself!

Apocalypse also begins play with the Master Manipultor special power which allows him to use Shape Change and Telekinesis.  That’s not all though, becuase if Apocalypse uses Telekinesis to move an opposing figure and his (successful) attack roll is doubles, Master Manipulator also deals damage equal to Apocalypse’s damage value!

Apocalypse possesses a wide array of offensive powers to target his foes both near and from afar.  With two targets and 7 range, few figures will be able to hide from Apocalypse, and the Indomitable ability allows him to act without fer of pushing damage (so long as he doesn’t already have two tokens on him anyhow)! Mid- and end-dial Regenerate work to keep Apocalypse on the battlefield, while Impervious and Invulnerability absorb some (if not all!) of the damage dealt by your opponent’s figures.

As you can see, these three new colossals are here to fight and can bring some serious firepower to many different strategies.  So where can you find them? Just check below for a full list of all of the Toys ‘R’ Us stores, by state, that will have Apocalypse, the Sentinel Mark II, and the Sentinel Mark V exclusives available for sale:

On the Road…Spoiling for a Fight

As always, I look forward to convention season because of getting to see friends that I only see during that time.  Inevitably, we argue and fight about where to eat and what movie to see (trust me this one gets debated endlessly).  Players battle it out day after day on their way to the finals of the Championship event and everyone is spoiling for a fight but really wants to win the War and emerge as the champ.  No different was Apocalypse’s plan for survival of the fittest as he wanted the best mutants and rounding out his troops is the final Horsemen of the Apocalypse War.

Abraham Kieros was a soldier who knew much about fighting for survival as he survived the Vietnam War but it cost him his mobility.  Chosen by Apocalypse, he readily accepted and was given his limbs back and a steed to ride into combat as evidenced by the transporter icon on the dial.  Just by clapping his hands he could make things Explode from Within (Penetrating/Psychic Blast) or cause Rings of Explosions (Pulse Wave) to help him defeat those who would oppose Apocalypse.   Of course, he comes in at 99 points so team him with Famine, Pestilence, and Archangel along with the Horsemen of Apocalypse ATA for a 400 point team that can test who is truly the fittest to survive on a HeroClix map!

Origins is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at GenCon.  For those not attending the conventions, another way to get this figure will be announced by the end of the year.

That ends these previews but there is so much more to talk about like the events at GenCon and the special prizes…what’s that Jerome…fine you win this fight and I won’t say anymore!

On the Road…Gamer Funk

One of the things that isn’t so great about conventions is gamer funk.  Those that have been will immediately recognize the smell and those that haven’t been to a convention will eventually be treated to it when they go.  I would dare say that it’s a Pestilence at the conventions or a Plague if you would have it.  So too is our next convention preview of the Second Horseman of the Apocalypse Pestilence a way to plague your opponents.

Plague was a Morlock who survived the Mutant Massacre in the tunnels of New York and was chosen by Apocalypse to be his Horsemen Pestilence.  She readily accepted and was given the power to Plague those who did not live up to Apocalypse’s vision of survival of the fittest.  Her Plague power can affect the toughest of opponents with poison that deals penetrating damage while using it.  In addition to her powers, Apocalypse gave her a steed to ride into combat as evidenced by the transporter icon on the dial.  Of course, she also comes in at 99 points and the Horsemen of Apocalypse ATA would be a welcome addition if teamed with Famine and some other friends as well!

Origins is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at GenCon.  For those not attending the conventions, another way to get this figure will be announced by the end of the year.

Well, that’s all that I’ve got time for now as the thought of gamer funk is driving me away.  Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting preview!

On the Road…Famished

One of the items that I always think of when convention season comes around is of all the great food that I get to eat while I’m on the road.  At Origins, it’s the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the food court of the convention center.  Working the convention, I need to stock up on food to get through the day and it’s no different if your opponent is fielding the First Horsemen of the Apocalypse Famine.

Autumn Rolfson was a teen with an eating disorder before being turned into Famine by Apocalypse.  To show her new power as Famine, she can Starve the opponent with her special power and give action tokens to each adjacent opposing character.  Thus, slowing down the competition as they have to deal with being hungry and having to stop and eat food or otherwise starve to death (just like Beast stopping to eat junk food in the comic).  In addition to her powers, Apocalypse gave her a steed to ride into combat as evidenced by the transporter icon on the dial.  Of course, she also comes in at 99 points and the Horsemen of Apocalypse ATA would be a welcome addition if she just had some friends with her as well!

Origins is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at GenCon.  For those not attending the conventions, another way to get this figure will be announced by the end of the year.

Well, I’ve got to go because all this talk of food has made me hungry.  Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting preview!

Don’t Call Them “X-Babies” Anymore!

Hello There HeroClix’ers!

Today’s article comes courtersy of the GenCon 2011 King of the Hill Champion, Stephen Plasco.  Below, Stephen shares with us all the thought and processes that went into the design of his very own Alternate Team Ability:

“After winning the King of the Hill tournament this past year at Gen Con, I knew I wanted to do something around one of my favorite comic books from when I was younger – The New Mutants.  I have always enjoyed the storylines that went along with this group and felt that as characters in HeroClix, they really did not receive enough love and attention, though GSX has certainly helped.  You would almost never see them in a competitive play environment, and they were also one of the rarer teams used with regards to theme teams.  I felt they needed a bit of a boost and an ATA might do just that.

“My original intent on this card was to have it so a character could jump in front of another character and “save” them.  In essence, when a character with the ATA was attacked, and adjacent friendly character with the same ATA could take an action token and become the target of the attack instead (regardless of the legality of the line of fire).  While this was a good idea in theory, in practice it caused a lot of rules issues and would have needed a page of errata in order for it to be used properly.  It just wasn’t feasible for it to be written as simply as I originally envisioned it.  So we simplified the effect a bit, and decided to make it function similar to Mastermind.  Also, wording it so that characters taking the damage could only use the power once per turn was getting both tricky and wordy so we decided to get rid of it.  In reality, a character with zero action tokens jumping around to save his friends twice in a row seems a bit silly, but in terms of game play,  it makes the card a little bit stronger.

“In the end, we decided to word it the way that it is now as to have no confusion on how it worked, but still capture the flavor of one New Mutant sacrificing themselves for another.

“I made a card to utilize the team (s) included correctly and in a fun way, as well as allow wildcards to use it so that it was playable in a competitive environment.  I hope that was accomplished and you all enjoy playing with it, and The New Mutants, in future games.

-Stephen C. Plasco (AKA Logansan)”

Thanks Stephen! Without further adieu, here is the New Mutants alternate team ability:

Thanks for all your hard work Stephen.  As a fellow New Mutants fan I’m very grateful and cannot wait to play this ATA at my Venue’s next tournament!

The New Mutants is our last GSX print and play article, but we will have some exciting articles in the weeks to come so stay tuned and keep on clixin’!
