WES 2013 HeroClix National Qualifier in Your Store!

Greetings WizKids Fans and Supporters!

Do you feel that your players are the cream of the crop and the best there is?

We mentioned it earlier in our announcement about Origins Game Fair but let’s dig into the details of a HeroClix National Qualifier event in your local game store.  Starting today, you can set-up a WizKids HeroClix National Qualifier event in the WizKids Event System (WES) for your store.  This special event has a limit of 1 per store and must be run between May 1st – May 31st, 2013.  The suggested format for this event is sealed (just like the Thursday and Friday events at Origins), but you know your players best so you can change the format to best suit the needs of your players.  Your event must have 1 winner and the results must be reported by June 4th in WES.  The winner of the HeroClix National Qualifier in Your Store event gets a pass into the HeroClix Nationals Finals on Saturday at Origins (badge and travel not included).  Below is a screenshot of what the WizKids 2013 National Qualifier event template will look like in the WES (click on image to enlarge):

On the Road – DexCon 15!

Greetings WizKids Games Fans and Supporters!

WizKids Games is pleased to announce that we will be attending DexCon 15 in neighboring Morristown, New Jersey on July 6th, 7th, and the 8th with a whole host of events for HeroClix and Quarriors fans alike! DexCon and Dreamation (also operated by Double Exposure, Inc.) are the premiere gaming conventions in New Jersey and have been a staple in the northeastern gaming scene for two decades.  Their close proximity to WizKids Games makes them an ideal locale for our events and we are happy to have this opportunity to connect with our fans in the northeast (and beyond!).

Players will have the chance to play in many tourneys at DexCon this year between the HeroClix Worlds 2012 qualifier, Battle Royales, a Galactic Guardians Colossal event, a Star Trek event, a Street Fighter/Marvel/DC Team-up event, and our second-ever Quarriors! Quorld Championship Qualifying event!   HeroClix grinders return for another shot for a skilled player to qualify for Worlds 2012;  can you battle it out with the other players and emerge as the winner?

In addition to all of these tourneys, we also have demos available; try your hand out with Quarriors, or run down the Ringbearer as a Ringwraith in Lord of the Rings: Nazgul! Lead your fleet to victory in Star Trek: Fleet Captains, or battle for hegemony in Mage Knight!

Last but certainly not least, DexCon 15 is also offering a special Badge discount for WizKids Games’ players: Enter code CLIXD15 for a $10.00 discount to your badge!!!

The full list of events for DexCon15 is below and we look forward to seeing you there!

HeroClix Battle Royale:  Interested in fast and furious HeroClix play?  Want to prove you’re the best no matter what team you draft?  Then this event is for you!  This event will utilize 1 HeroClix booster from either a Marvel or DC HeroClix expansion.

Players will purchase entry to this event (see cost below) and once the pod of four players has been seated, product will be provided for the event.  Players will then draft their teams per standard HeroClix draft procedure.  At the conclusion of the game each player will return the figures they used for the event to the center of the map to create a prize pool, to which will be added a 2012 convention figure (Apocalypse 2012 Convention Figure for Marvel HeroClix Battle Royales, and Dr Fate 2012 Convention Figure for DC HeroClix Battle Royales).  Players will then participate in a “snake draft” and select their prizes with the winning player choosing first, and then on to the next player by descending final score.  Prize drafting will take place in this order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1, etc…

Cost for this event will be $12.

Prize for this event: Apocalypse or Dr Fate 2012 Convention Figure

HeroClix Modern Age Street Fighter Brave Team-Up Event:  Build the best 300 point Modern Age team but each force may only have three figures; no Tactics!  One figure must be from Street Fighter, one from Marvel HeroClix, and one from DC HeroClix.  Band your heroes together and lead them to glory!  This event will be limited to 24 players so be sure to secure your place early.

Prize for this event: Apocalypse or Dr Fate 2012 Convention Figure (winner’s choice)

Availability/Schedule:  Friday (July 6) at 2 PM

HeroClix Scenario: Meteor Shower! A mighty battle rages between hero and villain.  Amidst the chaos, the skies darken.  A shadow on the ground begins to grow…and grow…and grow…

Build a 500 point team using the modern age rules.  At random intervals throughout the match (approximately every 5-10 minutes), the judge will call out map coordinates where a meteorite has just struck.  Using the map key printed along the edges, players will locate this square on their maps and place a debris token in that square and deal damage as follows:

  • A figure occupying this square is immediately dealt 3 unavoidable damage.
  • A figure one square away is immediately dealt 2 penetrating damage.
  • A figure two squares away is immediately dealt 1 damage.

(A figure may only be dealt damage once per meteor regardless of how many squares would be affected and is dealt damage based on the square of its dial closest to the impact point.)

This event will be limited to 16 players so be sure to secure your place early.

Prize for this event: Apocalypse or Dr Fate 2012 Convention Figure (winner’s choice)

Availability/Schedule:  Saturday (July 7) at 10 AM

HeroClix On The Road 2012 – Punisher!

Greetings WizKids Games Fans and Supporters!

One of the great things about going to conventions is the chance to meet new players and also to see players again that you haven’t seen in a while.  It’s even better when you get to sit down and play a HeroClix game with them.  Better still would be to deal out a little punishment to their figures in that game and to claim a prize while doing it.  What better way to ensure that you can punish future players who would stand in your way than with our third 2012 HeroClix convention preview, the Punisher.

The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, has lots of criminals to punish because of the death of his family by the mob, but he has also taken on other causes over the years.  When Captain America apparently died at the end of the Civil War, Punisher decided to wear a costume inspired by him.  Unfortunately, the Punisher wasn’t exactly like Captain America!  With the My Leadership Style is… Different trait, you can remove tokens from friendly characters that have KO’d opposing characters with an attack.  The Punisher can also Start in the Shadows (Stealth) so he can’t be seen by opposing characters while targeting them with his Infrared Goggles, which allows him to ignore hindering terrain for line of fire purposes, and his Sharpshooter ability, which allows him to ignore opposing characters for line of fire purposes.

If that’s not enough to deal with your opponent, the Punisher can use his High-Caliber Bullets (Penetrating/Psychic Blast) to cut through opposing characters defenses to make sure that they take the damage.  Finally, unlike Captain America, the Punisher has no qualms about killing those who have broken the law and he can charge in with his Does Cap Kill You Like…This (Charge) power to finish off the opposing characters.

This figure will first be available at Gen Con 2012 as a prize.  Just don’t alienate your friends by punishing them too much with this figure in your local HeroClix games!  Tune in on May 16th for another exciting Convention preview!

For questions on any of the conventions, please email:  HeroClixConventions@gmail.com

On the Road…Where Does He Get Those Wonderful Toys?

That is one of my favorite lines from a movie (can you guess which movie?) but it also leads me to answer a question that has been on a lot of player’s minds recently.

How Do I Get Those Wonderful Convention Prizes?

So in the interest of letting the players know, let’s explain how it’s going to work.

At Origins Game Fair 2011, players will be able to win prizes in the following fashion:

Battle Royales will get the winner a random Horsemen of Apocalypse as a prize.

National Grinders are an 8-person, 3 round Swiss format tournament.  In the third round, 2 undefeated players will be playing off and the winner gets a seat at the National Finals on Saturday and his choice between 2 random Horsemen of Apocalypse and the loser gets the other Horsemen.

GSX Superbooster Event will get prizes for each player from amongst Horsemen of Apocalypse, GSX chases, and Dr. Manhattan Colossal figures.

Captain America Release Event will get Horsemen of Apocalypse as prizes for the top eight players.

National Finals will get the winner a badge for GenCon, a bye into the World Semi-Final Constructed Event on Saturday at GenCon, a set of the Horsemen of Apocalypse, and other prizes.  Second place through Fourth place will get a bye into the World Semi-Final Constructed Event on Saturday at GenCon, another Horsemen of Apocalypse figure, and other prizes.

At GenCon 2011, players will be able to win prizes in the following fashion:

Marvel Battle Royales will get the winner a Moonstone as a prize.

DC Battle Royales will get the winner a Wonder Woman as a prize.

King of the Hill on Thursday through Saturday will get the winner another 2 boosters of product so they can play again.  Make it to the King of the Hill Finals on Sunday and you will get a set of the Horsemen of Apocalypse.  Win the King of the Hill Final and you get to design your own ATA, BFC, or feat with game design plus Moonstone and Wonder Woman.

GSX Superbooster Event will get prizes for the top 16 players from amongst Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Moonstone, GSX chases, and Dr. Manhattan Colossal figures.

The Constructed Events will get prizes for 1st and 2nd place players from amongst Wonder Woman, Moonstone, and other prizes.

Worlds Grinders are an 8-person, 3 round Swiss format tournament.  In the third round, 2 undefeated players will be playing off and the winner gets a seat at the World Semi-Finals on Saturday and his choice between 2 random figures from a pool of Horsemen of Apocalypse, Moonstone, and Wonder Woman and the loser gets the other figure.

World Semi-Finals will get the top 16 players a prize from the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Moonstone, or Wonder Woman prize pool and a spot in the World Finals on Sunday.

World Finals will get the winner a prize package to include designing your own figure in an upcoming set (subject to licensor and WizKids approval).  Can you design the next Nightcrawler or Black Adam?  In addition the winner will get a set of Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Moonstone, and other fabulous prizes.  The rest of the top 16 players from Worlds will get prizes from amongst the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Moonstone, and other prizes.

As you can see, there are lots of wonderful prizes for our players at Origins and GenCon this year!

For those not attending the conventions, another way to get the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, and Moonstone will be announced by the end of the year.

Wait, did I forget something…I have to find my cards so I can remember what it was…

On the Road: Amazons and Avengers

Hello HeroClix Fans!

If you’re anything like me, one of the things you love about attending conventions is all the really cool swag you find at the different booths and WizKids is no exception! Over the years WizKids has offered some really cool figures and we’re happy to say this year will be no different!

You’ve already heard about the Horsemen of Apocalypse which will premiere at Origins, well, we don’t want our GenCon fans to feel left out so we’re very pleased to present two figures that will first be available at GenCon!

First up we have none other than the most manipulative (Dark) Avenger, Moonstone!

Moonstone brings a host of useful abilities to your Dark Avengers lineup, not least of which is her Trait.  The ability to ignore blocking terrain while moving mimics her intangibility as Moonstone manuevers into position for maximum effectiveness.  Combine her Intangible Attack Trait with her Charge and Running Shot powers and Moonstone can attack her opponents with little concern for terrain.

Front loaded Outwit and Super Strength give way to Penetrating/Psychic Blast and eventually PerplexInvulnerability becomes Mastermind and then Energy Shield/Deflection as Moonstone shifts from a high-density defense to bravely manuevering her allies between her and her foes.  Pulse Wave on Moonstone’s late-dial repesents her omnidirectional blasts as she attempts to get to a safer vantage point.

Moonstone is an excellent addition to your force at 135 points whether you’re playing Dark Avengers, Thunderbolts, or any team designed to maximize her strengths.  However, Moonstone isn’t the only figure premiering at GenCon!

Next up we have Wonder Woman!

The first thing you’ll notice is we’ve gone in a new direction for the Amazon Princess to match the new costume and direction Wonder Woman’s book has taken in the last year.   However, all the strength and tenacity you’ve come to expect from Diana is there regardless of her wardrobe!

First off, let’s look at that Trait; Bullets and Bracelets provides Diana with  incredible protection against ranged attacks! Energy Shield/Deflection as well as Super Senses all but ensures frustration for your opponents unless they’re willing to move into close combat with Wonder Woman.

Watch out though, like all Amazons Wonder Woman is an expert hand-to-hand combatant as well! Front-loaded Charge and Super Strength are a familiar combination for Wonder Woman but mid-dial Diana moves into Hypersonic Speed and her Lasso Capture special power which prevents any opposing figure from breaking away from adjacency if Wonder Woman damaged them with an attack.  Hypersonic Speed eventually gives way to Flurry as Wonder Woman switches tactics against her opponents.

And let’s not ignore Wonder Woman’s Princess of the Amazons special power! Perplex is always useful but when Diana targets another Amazon she can increase any combat value (except damage-she is an ambassador for peace after all!) by +2 instead.  Late-dial Outwit also means that Wonder Woman is an excellent choice for the Brilliant Tactician feat, and let’s not overlook the Indomitable ability on Wonder Woman as well!

We hope you’ve enjoyed these previews as much as we have.  Again, GenCon will be the first opportunity for HeroClix fans to win these exciting pieces, but like the Horsemen we will be announcing other ways these figures will become available  before the end of the year.

Be sure to join us on Monday as begin another exciting series of HeroClix previews.  Until then keep your figures off their K.O. clix!

On the Road…GenCon

After all of the fun and excitement of Origins and our HeroClix National tournament, we turn to the next big event on the calendar which is GenCon on August 4-7, 2011 (www.gencon.com).  This is the big event where we blow out all of the stops with tourneys of all shapes and sizes and for all levels of skill as well.

Are you a competitive player?  Then the HeroClix World Championship is for you.  Play in a grinder with 7 fellow players and prove that you can emerge undefeated and win a convention LE prize and move onto the Semi-Finals portion of the HeroClix World Championship event where you will join the top 4 players from the HeroClix National Championship from Origins.  Grinders allow you to play whenever we have 8 players ready to go.  Come early! Stay late!  The choice is yours with these grinder events.  Make it through the Semi-Final event and count yourself amongst the top 16 HeroClix players in the World.  Battle it out on Sunday with the other 16 players for the right to help design a HeroClix figure for a future expansion (pending licensor approval of course) plus other prizes if you are the HeroClix World Champion.

If the HeroClix World Championship isn’t your thing then play in a Battle Royale, King of the Hill, or 1 of 8 other tourneys over the course of 4 days like the HeroClix Giant Size Super Booster event or the HeroClix Golden Age event.  Don’t want the pressure of playing in an event, then HeroClix Open Play is for you!  Give us a generic ticket and you can play whatever type of HeroClix game that you want with your friends (of course pending available table space).  We listened to the feedback from last year and will have extended hours on Thursday and Friday so you can play from 9 AM in the morning until Midnight.  That’s 15 hours of HeroClix gaming! (Boy am I and the other volunteers going to be tired!)  An important thing to note is that playing in tourneys in the hall requires GenCon specific event tickets or generic event tickets as we are not allowed to take cash for events.  Start signing up for ticketed events on May 1st at the GenCon website.

Don’t want to play in a tourney, then stop by the booth where you can demo our dice game Quarriors, explore space in the Star Trek Expeditions game, battle it out with Street Fighter HeroClix, or see a demo of HeroClix Online plus many other games yet to be revealed.  Want to purchase product in the booth, it must be done with cash (as always it’s while supplies last).

Please don’t forget to keep coming back to the WizKids website as we will be having several announcements in the coming weeks like retirement, a new player’s guide, and the cool prizes of….sorry, don’t want to spoil Jerome’s fun on this one!

We look forward to seeing all of you at GenCon 2011!

On the Road…Origins Game Fair

Darin Skutt | Published : April 20, 2011

As always when the weather turns warmer, I begin to think of convention season and this year is no different. Last year, GenCon was a huge success and we wanted to build upon that by going to Origins Game Fair on June 23-26th, 2011 and having a HeroClix National Championship that will lead to the HeroClix World Championship at GenCon. That’s right; WizKids is going to both Origins and GenCon this year for twice the tourney action!

Players will have the chance to play in many tourneys at Origins this year between HeroClix Nationals grinders, Battle Royales, Giant Size X-Men Colossal event, and a Captain America event. HeroClix National grinders will be a sealed event for 8 players. Want to walk the hall early or get up late because of what you did last night (we won’t ask!), you can do what you want because the grinders start whenever we have 8 players ready to go. Battle it out with the other players and emerge as the winner and get a LE prize and entrance into the National’s Final Event on Saturday. At the Nationals finals, prove you are one of the top 4 players and you get a bye into the World’s Saturday Constructed event at GenCon along with other prizes. Emerge as the top player and you get a badge to GenCon as well as additional prizes. Can you be the HeroClix National winner?

In addition to all of these tourneys, you can stop by the board game hall or the demo hall and play the new Quarriors game or explore space in the Star Trek Expeditions game along with other demos of WizKids games. An important thing to note is that playing in tourneys in the hall or purchasing product which will also happen in the tourney hall must be done in cash (as always it’s while supplies last for product and tourneys).

In the coming weeks, we’ll talk about the special prizes for these events and also update all of you on the GenCon list of events but unfortunately I have to leave you as I see three riders on the horizon. The full list of events for Origins is below and we look forward to seeing you there!
