Marvel HeroClix: Captain America Con Exclusive

Greetings HeroClix fans!

We’ve been spoiling sneak peaks at the Convention Exclusives that will be available for you to win in February during the Winter 2017 WizKids Open.  Today, we are taking a trip down one of Marvel Comics’ possible dystopian futures with Captain America from the Earth X limited series!

Though still in peak physical condition the Captain America from Earth X is showing his age.  This kid from Brooklyn has grown up to be 100 years old and still fighting!  After killing the Red Skull in battle he resigns from the Avengers; feeling unfit for duty, but soon returns from retirement and gathers new recruits to battle the army of a young Skull who invades New York City.

Marvel HeroClix: Captain America Con Exclusive

Bringing this alternate reality Captain America to your table will cost you 65 points, giving you a lot for such an economical point value.  In addition to the S.H.I.E.L.D. and Soldier keywords he is the first character in HeroClix history to have the Earth X keyword.  He has two traits to help lead your team to victory.  First, I’ll Help You Break Free Of The Skull’s Control prevents himself from being the target of Mind Control and prevents him from being knocked back.  Also, friendly characters modify their defense values by +2 when targeted by Mind Control.  With his second trait, Preparing For War, you may choose to have Captain America do no damage when he hits a character that is equipped with an object to place that object on his own card.  At the beginning of your turn you may equip any item on your card that you’ve gathered from this trait, switching it out for any other item you’ve already equipped with this trait. Basically, Captain America can take objects equipped as items on opposing characters, store them on his card, and every turn he can choose to equip a different one without discarding the others.

Going to his dial, we see Cap is still the natural leader he has always been, leading from the front line.  With Running Shot, Energy Shield/Deflection, and a range value of 5 he can get into attack range fairly quickly and can be a serious threat with his attack value of 11 and Indomitable to ignore pushing damage.  Even when he is in the thick of the battle he is still able to motivate his team to fight their hardest.  His special damage power, The Leader We Need, lets him use Leadership but the dice roll cannot be re-rolled and when he succeeds at the roll, you may remove an action token from any number of friendly characters regardless of adjacency or point value, as long as their total point value together does not go over 150.  Once Captain America takes a few clicks of damage he gains a few slots of Precision Strike and late dial he switches to a close combat focus picking up Charge, Combat Reflexes, and Exploit Weakness.

Thanks for reading!  Please stay tuned for more exciting previews of our 2017 Convention Exclusives, and visit the WizKids Info Network to register for a WizKids Open event near you!

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP- New Avengers Team

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Today, we’re taking a step back from the sealed portion of the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play event and checking out a constructed team featuring the Anti-Registration members of the New Avengers!  Up first is a Hero for Hire who is taking the role of a close-attacking bruiser on our team.  Sweet Christmas, it’s Luke Cage!

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play- New Avengers Team - Luke Cage

At 70 points, Luke Cage can throw a mean punch and take one, too, thanks to an appropriate power set that includes Charge, Flurry, Super Strength, Invulnerability, Toughness, and Close Combat Expert.  Additionally, Luke Cage has a trait called Unbreakable Skin, which lets him reduce penetrating damage dealt to him and thwart powers like Penetrating/Psychic Blast and Exploit WeaknessLuke Cage has the standard speed, attack, defense, and damage combat symbols and starts his dial with the combination of Charge and Super Strength. Be sure to have him grab an object and get him into the fight to deal some extra damage.  Also, if you plan ahead when using Charge, you can end Luke Cage’s movement next to a teammate who’s ready to make a close attack and boost that character’s damage with Empower.  Toward the end of his dial, Luke Cage picks up a special power called Not Giving Up, which lets him use Toughness and Willpower.

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play - New Avengers Team - Spider-Woman

Next up on our New Avengers force is Spider-Woman, whose role on our team would be that of a ranged attacker, tie-up, and taxi.  Spider-Woman comes in at 60 points and can shoot one target up to four squares away.  She also has the standard attack, defense, and damage combat symbols, along with the flyer speed symbol, which grants her the use of the Flight and Carry abilities.  Spider-Woman’s power set includes standard powers like Plasticity, Sidestep, Super Senses, Combat Reflexes and Perplex, and makes her difficult to hit and escape from.  She also hits the battlefield with a trait called Hidden Agenda, which lets her heal a click when a friendly character is KO’d.  Offensively, Spider-Woman has a special power called Bio-Electric Blasts, which allows her to use Precision Strike.  Additionally, when she shoots an opponent and hits, her target is given an action token after actions resolve.  Bio-Electric Blasts is a power that is useful in limiting your opponent’s options by placing action tokens on enemy characters and Precision Strike to whittle through their dials.

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play- New Avengers Team - Spider-Man

Spider-Man is the next member of our force and plays the role of shooter/melee combatant.  Spider-Man has a point value of 80 and can shoot a single target up to four squares away.  Mobility isn’t a concern for the wall-crawler, who has an Improved Movement ability called Does Whatever a Spider Can, that allows him to ignore elevated and hindering terrain when he moves.  Additionally, opponents may have trouble landing attacks on Spider-Man as his Annoying Arachnid trait lets him use Super Senses to potentially evade attacks. Also, if he hits with a close attack, Annoying Arachnid lets him use Sidestep and automatically break away when doing so.  When it comes to piling it on in close combat, Spider-Man can use Charge and Flurry through his Amazing, Spectacular, Sensational speed special power.  The rest of Spider-Man’s power set features standard powers like Super Strength, Energy Shield/Deflection, Combat Reflexes, Willpower and Perplex.

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP - Captain America 001

We’ve previously shown you the leader and last member of our New Avengers force, Captain America, but let’s take another look at what ol’ winghead brings to the fight.  Like Luke Cage and Spider-Man, Captain America can mix it up in close combat and has the standard powers Flurry and Charge to get down and dirty.  He can also play the role of ranged attacker and throw his mighty shield up to five squares away to make his opponents yield.  Mobility isn’t much of an issue for Captain America because he can ignore hindering terrain and characters with his Improved Movement ability, called Soldiering On.  He also has two special powers, Blocking Repulsor Blasts and Leading the ResistanceBlocking Repulsor Blasts offers him some bonuses and protection from ranged attacks by letting him use Energy Shield/Deflection and Toughness and by preventing him from being targeted by attacks that use Ranged Combat ExpertLeading the Resistance boosts Captain America’s effectiveness in melee situations by letting him use Close Combat Expert and Leadership as if he were 100 points.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our New Avengers themed team, featuring figures from the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP, which comes to a total of 290 points.  Speaking of themes, all four characters on our New Avengers force have the Anti-Registration and Avengers named keywords.

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP – Captain America & Iron Man

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

We’re pleased to kick off our series of previews for our latest Storyline Organized Play event, Marvel HeroClix: Civil War! The Storyline OP begin this June so be sure to visit the WizKids Info Network to find stores hosting official Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP events near you.

These Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP events will be different from previous OP events as the set was designed and tailored to the characters and their factions . Each Civil War five-figure booster pack contains characters from the Pro-Registration, Anti-Registration, and Neutral factions.  Each character’s HeroClix base is colored to denote their faction:  Pro-Registration characters are red, Anti-Registration characters are blue, and Neutral characters have black bases.  For the Civil War Storyline OP set, the characters numbered #001 to #032 were designed in “pairs” of figures that have a similar point cost.  All the odd-numbered figures are part of Captain America’s team while the members of Iron Man’s team are even numbered. This character balance will come into play during your team drafting at the events.

How about we start things off by taking a look at the first pairing of characters in the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP set?  First up is Captain America!

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP - Captain America 001

Captain America comes in at 80 points and has the standard movement, attack, and damage symbols.  He also has the Indomitable defense symbol, which lets him act on consecutive turns without fear of taking pushing damage. Captain America’s Improved Movement ability called Soldiering On, lets him ignore hindering terrain and characters when he moves. As the leader of the Anti-Registration forces, Captain America has the Anti-Registration keyword along with Avengers and Soldier to aid you if you choose to include him on a keyword-themed team.

Moving on to traits and powers, Captain America hits the battlefield with a trait called Just A Friendly Handshake, which he can only use once per game. Just a Friendly Handshake allows Captain America to neutralize Armor or Robot characters, like Iron Man, for a turn by giving them two action tokens when he hits them with an attack while adjacent. Captain America also has special powers in his defense and damage slots, respectively.  In his defense slot is a special power called Blocking Repulsor Blasts, which lets Captain America use Energy Shield/Deflection and Toughness, while also preventing characters from attacking him with Ranged Combat Expert. Captain America’s Energy Shield/Deflection and immunity to Ranged Combat Expert from Blocking Repulsor Blasts help him get into battle even if he is being attacked at range. The special power in Captain America’s damage slot is called Leading the Resistance which lets him use Close Combat Expert and Leadership as if he were 100 points.

The remainder of Captain America’s dial features standard powers like Sidestep, Flurry, Charge, Precision Strike, Toughness, Combat Reflexes and OutwitCaptain America also has a solid set of combat values with attack numbers that never dip below 10.

Captain America can easily hold his own in close combat but also has a flexible range of five squares to shoot as needed.  Conversely, his Pro-Registration counterpart in the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline Organized Play set is a better shooter but can also throw a punch when an opponent gets too close.  Let’s take a look at Iron Man!

Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP - Iron Man 002

Also coming in at 80 points but with the ability to shoot a single target six squares away, Iron Man has the standard attack and damage symbols and the Indomitable defense symbol.  He also has the wing speed symbol, which lets him fly and carry teammates.  As the head of the Pro-Registration faction, Iron Man has the Pro-Registration keyword along with Armor, Avengers, Illuminati, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Scientist.

As for traits and powers, Iron Man enters play with a trait called I Wanted to Talk, But… which can be used once per game when Iron Man targets a single opposing character with an attack.  If Iron Man shares a keyword with the target, he may counter that character’s defense power for the attack. With a lot of Avengers keyword characters involved in the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP, there are a lot of targets for this ability. Like Captain America, Iron Man has special powers in his defense and damage slots.  Iron Man’s defensive special power, Your Shield Can’t Scratch Me, Steve, lets him use Impervious. Additionally, Iron Man can’t be targeted by an attack using Close Combat Expert if any characters get too close. Iron Man’s damage special power We Must Follow and Implement the Law, allows him to use Ranged Combat Expert and Leadership as if he were 100 points.

Rounding out Iron Man’s dial are the standard powers Sidestep, Force Blast, Energy Explosion, Toughness, Energy Shield/Deflection, and Outwit.  As for combat values, Iron Man has slightly higher speed numbers than Captain America but his attack values taper a bit toward the end of his dial.  Defense and damage values match on both characters as well.

Thanks for reading!  Join us again as we reveal more exciting characters and highlight strategies and team builds from the Marvel HeroClix: Civil War Storyline OP set. Don’t forget to mark your calendars as events kick off this June!

Marvel HeroClix: Captain America – Twenty-First Century Blitz Strategy

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

We’re back with another team building exercise, featuring characters from the Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. set!  Today, however, we’re taking a different approach to team building and will be highlighting characters from writer Ed Brubaker’s and artist Steve Epting’s critically acclaimed run on Captain America.  Specifically, we’re looking at the “Twenty-First Century Blitz” story arc from Captain America issues 18 to 21!

Marvel HeroClix: Avenger vs. X-Men- Captain America

Our story brings Captain America across the Atlantic to England in his search for the Winter Soldier, who has traveled to London to kill the head of the mysterious Kronas Corporation, Aleksander Lukin.  To start out our team, we’ll add Captain America from the Avengers Starter Set of the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers vs. X-Men Storyline Organized Play event.  We’ll use Captain America at his 100-point starting line, which features Running Shot, Empower, Invulnerability and his Take Down special power.  Captain America also has an Improved Movement ability which lets him ignore hindering terrain and characters when he moves.

While in London, Cap is met by two old friends, Joseph Chapman (aka Union Jack) and Jacqueline Falsworth (aka Spitfire).  The three heroes split up to investigate Kronas Corp’s activities, with Cap and Union Jack checking out a freighter loading and unloading crates marked with the Kronas logo while Spitfire has gone beneath the city to see what the corporation is building there.

Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.- Union Jack

We’ve previously shown you the next two members of our team, Union Jack and Spitfire from the Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. set, so you can check out what they bring to the battlefield by reading their respective previews.  Union Jack and Spitfire come in at 90 and 95 points, respectively, and have the Invade Your Territory trait so you won’t have to deal with moving around opposing Barrier and Smoke Cloud markers.  Union Jack is solid as a ranged and melee combatant while Spitfire makes a great hit-and-run attacker.

Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.- Spitfire

Eventually, our trio of heroes close in on Lukin (who is secretly the Red Skull), which means the Winter Soldier is nearby.  Winter Soldier has Lukin in his crosshairs of his sniper rifle and is about to pull the trigger when he notices that Cap is in peril, so he drops his weapon to save Cap.  The distraction allows Lukin to activate The Sleeper, one of the Red Skull’s giant deathbots!

MV26 Winter Soldier 024

We’ll round out our team of heroes by adding the uncommon Winter Soldier from the Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. set.  Winter Soldier comes in at 95 points and, appropriately, has a special power called Deadly Sniper which lets him use Outwit and Ranged Combat Expert from 10 squares away.  Winter Soldier also has an Improved Targeting ability called Ultimate Infiltrator that lets him ignore hindering terrain and characters when he shoots.  Finally, Winter Soldier also has the Invade Your Territory trait, just like Union Jack and Spitfire.  With his Deadly Sniper special power, Winter Soldier is definitely suited to be your force’s ranged attacker.

All four characters share the Invaders and Soldier keywords and come to a total of 380 points, which leaves plenty of points left over for bystanders, special objects or resources.

Twenty-First Century Blitz ends with Captain America and Winter Soldier defeating The Sleeper, with Cap’s former sidekick slipping away into the shadows shortly after.

If you’re looking for some thematic villains to play against this team, the Twenty-First Century Blitz storyline also features Red Skull, Crossbones and Sin.  You might want to consider the Red Skull from the Avengers Assemble set and the Sin and Crossbones duo from the Invincible Iron Man set.  Both characters come to 358 points, which leaves lots of flexibility for rounding out the rest of your force.

Thanks for reading!  Join us again for more exciting looks into the world of HeroClix.

Clix It Up- Marvel HeroClix: Captain America

Greetings, HeroClix fans!

We hope you’ve all been enjoying the latest Marvel HeroClix release, Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.! We’ve had a lot of fun playing refreshed and updated versions of the Invaders, Hydra, Avengers, and of course the sets namesake, S.H.I.E.L.D. Today, we’re going to look at things a little differently than we have previously with our team building articles – rather than building something we’d play, we’re going to look at different options for specific characters. In our premiere Clix It Up article, we’re looking at different roles that can be filled by the Star-Spangled Avenger himself, Steve Rogers – AKA, Captain America!

Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.- Steve Rogers

In the role of a Leader for your squad is a super rare from Marvel HeroClix: Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and brings Steve Rogers into the mix, back when he was the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., taking back the reigns of the organization from the evil of Norman Osborn. This version of Steve comes in at 150 points, is Indomitable, and possesses the S.H.I.E.L.D. team ability. And, despite his offensive prowess, he features primarily as someone who improves his teammates. Starting with his Leading By (Very Good) Example trait, which states that he can use Leadership. Which, by itself, is great for a 150-point piece, but we don’t stop there. The trait also says that when Steve Rogers hits an opposing character, other friendly characters with the S.H.I.E.L.D. keyword can use Probability Control when they attack this turn! Steve also has a special defensive power called Energy Shield Extend, which grants him the use of three powers – Energy Shield/Deflection, Sidestep, and Toughness. In addition to that, adjacent friendly characters that share a keyword with him (Avengers, Invaders, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Soldier) can use Energy Shield/Deflection. Couple those two abilities with his standard powers of Enhancement and Empower, and you’ve got a natural leader who improves his teammates in almost every way!

Marvel HeroClix: Original Avengers Fast Forces Pack- Captain America

Our next choice for Cap is all about Board Control, pairing both multiple attack options and force repositioning. A 100-point piece that comes from the Original Avengers Fast Forces pack, this version of Captain America is a versatile team member for Avengers, Invaders, or Soldier teams. With the ability to break or get through damage reducers on each click, this Cap makes use of two advantageous special powers. The first, appearing on his opening two clicks of attack is called Shield Ricochet, states that you may give Captain America a ranged combat action, locking his damage value at it’s printed value until actions resolve. After that ranged combat action resolves, he may make a second ranged combat attack as a free action. Since this Captain America only has 1 target on his ranged attacks, this is a handy way to open up for full damage on multiple opponents. His second, called Avengers, Assemble appears on his first three clicks of damage, and is really handy for manipulating and moving your force around the board. This power allows you to give Captain America a power action, and lets you choose another friendly character that shares a keyword with him and doesn’t have 2 action tokens. That character can then be given a move action as a free action, with their speed value halved for this action.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble!- Captain America

If you’re looking for a straight up Attacker, our pick is from the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble! set, and is the most versatile natural ranged attacker to be looked at today, while simultaneously packing a serious amount of dangerous close combat prowess. With a range of 6 squares and two targets, his Improved Targeting: Ignores Elevated Terrain, and Ignores Blocking Terrain make him able to sling his shield all over the map – it’s great for taking out snipers attempting to hide on a ledge in stealth! He also gains the advantage of top dial free movement with Sidestep, which allows him to reposition himself slightly for ranged attacks, or to make use of his Super Soldier Serum special power that appears on his first three clicks of damage. This special ability states that Captain America can use both Close Combat Expert and Empower – meaning he can not only pump himself up via CCE, but also his fellow adjacent close combat attackers with Empower. This version of Cap also has the option to be played at a 4-click, 100-point dial, which is all about up close encounters, pairing Charge, Sidestep, Combat Reflexes, Exploit Weakness, and Close Combat Expert. He’s built to dish out damage and lock down your opponents.

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron SLOP- Captain America

Finally, we take a look at a Captain America that fills the role of both Secondary Attacker and Support unit – and, at 65 points, allowing you to build around him with little impact on your overall force total! One of the more popular pieces from the recent Age of Ultron Storyline OP event, the Uncommon Captain America  features several abilities in particular that are unique when compared to the other versions of Cap we’ve featured today. First, and perhaps most significantly, is his ability to use the Police team ability – meaning that when Captain America is adjacent to a friendly ranged attacker, you’ll modify the targets defensive value by -1, should Cap also have a line of fire to the target.  Also unique to this character is his special movement power, called Cap’s Motorcycle. This gives Steve the ability to use Defend, allowing him to share his 17 defensive value with adjacent friendly characters. In addition to that, Cap also gains the Move and Attack ability, but doesn’t modify his attack value by -2 when using it! He’s also in possession of a trait called Take Cover!, which states that adjacent friendly characters modify their defense by +1 against ranged combat attacks, if not already modified by this effect – this particular version of Captain America is all about force longevity and protecting his allies. However, perhaps most importantly for this particular Cap is his opening click of the always-useful Outwit power. The ability to counter powers is a key for successful squads, and to gain it on such a versatile 65 point piece is almost a no-brainer to put on your force.

That’s all for today’s, ‘Clix It Up article! We hope you’ve enjoyed this look at different options for the living legend of World War II. Chime in on social media and let us know, which one will you play!  Until next time, keep rolling sixes!

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron- Captain America

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Welcome back to another preview from this summer’s exciting Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline OP Event! Today, we’re going to take a look at one of the most iconic heroes of any generation, the star-spangled Avenger, Captain America!

Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron- Captain America

This version of Captain America is based upon his Golden Age appearances, so he’s very much still ‘new to the business’ of super-heroing. As such, Cap comes in at an incredibly cost effective 65-points. He also features the Police team ability, as well as keywords allowing him to easily fit in on Avengers, Howling Commandos, Invaders, Past, or Solider themed teams.

One of the major benefits of this version of Steve is his trait, called Take Cover! This trait grants friendly characters adjacent to Captain America the ability to modify their defensive values by +1 against ranged combat attacks, if they’re not already modified by this effect. In addition to that trait, Cap also begins his 5-click dial with 1 click of a special movement power called Cap’s Motorcycle. This trait grants Captain America the ability to use Defend, and grants him the Move and Attack ability. However, he doesn’t modify his attack value by -2 when doing so.

Captain America also come with a series of great accompanying powers, including – but not limited to – Sidestep, Incapacitate, Energy Shield/Deflection, Outwit, and Ranged Combat Expert. He’s a great low-point option to include on your teams, and can fit in nicely to fill roles typically reserved for higher point (or offensively weaker) characters.

That’s it for today, ‘Clix fans! Check back soon for more exciting Marvel HeroClix: Age of Ultron Storyline OP previews and news form the world of HeroClix!
