Marvel HeroClix Avengers vs. X-Men: Cable!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

In today’s X-citing preview, we take a closer look at the first competitive prize available in the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers vs. X-Men storyline Organized Play series! We shine spotlight on the time-displaced son of Scott Summers (better known as Cyclops), who in turn played the father figure to Hope Summers.  Of course, we’re talking about none other than the man known as Cable!

101-Cable

 

Cable begins play with two traits: the aptly named Save Hope provides a defense bonus to friendly adjacent characters named Hope Summers, while Coming After All of You modifies Cable’s attack and damage values when he attacks anyone with the Avengers team ability or keyword!

Early-dial, Cable maneuvers around the battlefield unhindered thanks to the Timeslide special power, which allows Cable to use both Phasing/Teleport and Shape Change.  Toughness protects Cable from some damage early dial and Outwit gives Cable a little extra offensive “oomph” as he counters he choice of powers on opposing figures within line of fire.

Mid-dial, Cable switches things up a bit as he exchanges the Timeslide special power for Running Shot which gives Cable the opportunity to best take advantage of his two targets and 7 range.    Cable’s attack special power, There’s Always a Plan B, grants Cable the ability to make a Duo Attack and during the second attack Cable may use Precision Strike, which is a great way to ensure that damage during that second attack.

Mid- to late-dial, Cable also exchanges Outwit for Perplex, allowing him to modify a combat value of his choice while Toughness gives way to Invulnerability for more damage reduction.

Late-dial, on Cable’s penultimate click, he picks up a solitary click of Penetrating/Psychic Blast while his final click reveals Earthbound/Neutralized (which counters his Indomitable combat ability for this single click) as well as Regeneration, both of which represent his body’s war with the Techno-Organic Virus that’s plagued him since almost his birth.

At 124 points, Cable is a strong contender for a good secondary attacker since his shorter dial makes him a tough choice for a primary offensive piece.  Regardless, his Future, Past, Soldier, X-Force and X-Men keywords make for some very easy theme team-building options!

Marvel HeroClix Avengers vs X-Men: Magik!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Welcome back as we bring you another preview from our next Marvel HeroClix Organized Play storyline event, Avengers vs. X-Men!  Today we take a look at the younger sister of Colossus, who was kidnapped as a child by the demon Belasco and raised in the dimension of Limbo.  She eventually escaped and became a core member of the New Mutants, then later one joined Cyclops’ X-Men.  From the X-Men Starter Set, please welcome Magik!

013-Magik

Magik can be played at 125 or 75 points.  Magik’s 75-point dial begins on click three.  At either point level, Magik has the Mystics and X-Men team abilities and a range of five squares with two targets.  For ease in team building, Magik has the Mystical and X-Men keywords.

Magik begins play with a trait called Teleportation Discs that represents her mutant ability to travel through limbo.  To use Teleportation Discs, give Magik a power action and choose an adjacent character.  Place Magik in any square within range and the chosen character is placed in a square adjacent to Magik.  Roll a d6, and on a result of 1-4 the chosen character can’t be given a non-free action until your next turn.

As we move to Magik’s dial, we see that she starts with a five-click run of a special power in her speed slot called I’ve Beaten Belasco.  This special power lets Magik deal penetrating damage to characters with the Mystical keyword.  In her attack slot, Magik starts with a click of Pulse Wave, then switches to Telekinesis on her next two clicks before regaining Pulse Wave.

Defensively, Magik starts with Energy Shield/Deflection on her first three clicks, then gains Barrier for her next two clicks.  A powerful sorceress in Limbo, Magik begins her damage slot with a pair of Probability Control clicks, then gains two clicks of Outwit when she reaches clicks 4 and 5.

Magik’s last two clicks see her gain Blades/Claws/Fangs as she relies upon her powerful Soulsword in close-quarters combat.  I’ve Beaten Belasco is also dropped in favor of Charge, as Magik’s more impulsive side fights its way to the surface.  Finally, Magik’s danger room training is represented in her defense slot as Combat Reflexes.

Like the other figures in the AvX X-Men Starter, Magik can be attached to the T002 X-Men team base and allows it to use Phasing/Teleport.  Additionally, if Colossus is also attached then the team base can use Energy Shield/Deflection.  The T002 X-Men team base is the Month 4 participation prize for those players who chose the X-Men as their team for the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline Organized Play event.

Marvel HeroClix Avengers vs. X-Men: Namor!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

We are pleased to bring you another preview from our next Marvel HeroClix Organized Play storyline event, Avengers vs. X-Men! Today we take a look at a character from the X-Men Starter Set who fought alongside Captain America during World War II as one of the Invaders but allied himself with the X-Men when the Phoenix Force came to Earth and became one of the Phoenix Five. Please welcome the savage Sub-Mariner, Namor!

Namor, the ruler of Atlantis, hits the battlefield with an Improved Movement ability called Boiling Rage, which lets him ignore other characters when he moves.  Namor also has a trait called Imperius Rex, which places a Rage token on his card when he’s hit with an attack or given a second action token. Before Namor rolls for an attack, you may remove a Rage token from his card and that attack deals penetrating damage!

Moving on to Namor’s dial, he can be played at either 225 or 150 points.  Namor begins his dial with the popular combination of Charge and Super Strength and has a base damage value of 4.  Namor also has the Wing speed symbol and the Indomitable combat ability (which lets him use Willpower).  Defensively, Namor starts with Impervious.  Once Namor is off his top click, he switches from Charge to Flurry for two clicks.  Namor also drops Super Strength in favor of Precision Strike on those same clicks, which also see him drop from Impervious to InvulnerabilityNamor’s legendary temper begins to churn as well, in the form of two clicks of Battle Fury.

Once we move past the first three clicks of Namor’s dial, we reach his 150-point starting line.  Here, Namor’s power set is identical to those from his first click.  On Namor’s sixth click we see a new power appear as Invincible shows up for two clicks.  Namor’s last three clicks offer him some options offensively as Flurry reappears in his speed slot and Close Combat Expert occupies his damage slot.  Defensively, Namor gains a special power called Entrenched Recovery, which lets him use Toughness.  Additionally, when Namor occupies water terrain he can use Regeneration and, when it’s not your turn, opposing characters can’t draw line of fire to him.

Namor, like the other figures in the AvX X-Men Starter, can be attached to the T002 X-Men team base that will be the Month 4 participation prize for those players who chose the X-Men as their team for this storyline Organized Play event.  When Namor is attached to the X-Men team base, it can use Close Combat Expert and the Flight ability.

Marvel HeroClix Avengers vs. X-Men: Magneto!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome to the latest in our series of previews from the Avengers versus X-Men (AvX) set, coming this November! In today’s preview we bring you the master of magnetism, Magneto! So, with no further ado, let’s iron out the details.

014-Magneto

Magneto comes in at either 200 or 150 points, and at either cost, he has the flight symbol, Indomitable and the trait Are You Sure About This, Scott? This states Magneto can use Energy Shield/Deflection and Telekinesis. During the beginning of your turn, if Magneto has two action tokens, he can use Telekinesis as a free action, but only may use it to place friendly characters. Let’s start with his 200 point dial.

Magneto has an 8 range with 2 targets. His first click has Running Shot, Pulse Wave, and Invincible. His second click he gains Leadership and trades Running Shot with the special power Magnetic Field which states that Magneto can use Force Blast. When he has no action tokens, he can use it as a free action. Partner those powers with his 11 attack and higher damage stats and he looks really… attractive.

At his 150 point cost, his stats go down a little, but he again starts out with has Running Shot, Pulse Wave, Invincible, and Leadership. His next click changes Running Shot once again to Magnetic Field. He also loses Leadership but gains Outwit.

Magneto, on click 5, changes to a 16 defense with Toughness but thanks to his trait, still has Energy Shield/Deflection which any ranged attackers will find somewhat repelling.  He also gains Enhancement for the rest of his dial, which is positive for his teammates but negative for his opponents.

With his keywords Ruler and X-Men, Magneto should be able to find a theme team he can stick to. It may even be in the form of a team base with his asset dial ability that allows you to give the team character a power action and they can use Telekinesis twice as a free action.

Marvel HeroClix Avengers vs. X-Men: Colossus!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome as we look at the figures from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers vs. X-Men organized play event. Today we break through walls as we look at Colossus from the X-Men Starter Pack!

012-Colossus

Colossus possesses Improved Movement and can ignore hindering terrain and blocking terrain. As he moves through the blocking terrain, Colossus destroys it leaving behind debris tokens in the squares that were blocking terrain.

Colossus has two separate starting lines. His veteran line is 175 points and starts with I Believe In The X-Men; this will allow Colossus to use Charge and Plasticity. If he has two actions tokens, adjacent friendly characters that can use the X-Men Team Ability can use that team ability as a free action.

The X-Men Team Ability: When two friendly characters that can use the X-Men team ability are adjacent to each other, give one of them a power action and roll a d6. Heal the other character of 1 damage. If the result was a 1-4 deal the character given the power action 1 unavoidable damage.

Can you say “free action heal”, but only when Colossus has 2 action token on him. Being he is also Indomitable this could happen after he performs a non-free action in round 2 and then again during round 3, and nothing states that the other character has to use it to heal Colossus.

Colossus also has a special power called Steel-Skinned X-Man; this allows him to use Defend and Impervious but on click 2 switches to Invincible. On both clicks 1 and 2 he can use Super Strength.

Click 3 is the start of Colossus’s experienced starting line at a point value of 125. He can use both special powers I Believe In The X-Men and Steel-Skinned X-Man as well as having Super Strength. Colossus picks up Sidestep for movement; allowing him to move 2 squares as a free action. Colossus also gains the use of Empower.

On click 6 Colossus can now use Invulnerability and Battle Fury. Next he gains the standard use of Charge and ends with the use of his special power Steel-Skinned X-Man.

Colossus has the X-Men team ability and Armor, Mystical and X-Men are his keywords.

When Colossus is on the AvX T002 X-Men team dial; that character can use Charge. When they do, if Magik is also attached, they can use Improved Movement and ignore blocking terrain!

Marvel HeroClix Avengers vs. X-Men: Cyclops!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Today we kick off dial previews of the AvX X-Men Starter from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers vs. X-Men organized play story line event.  Once you have chosen the X-Men as your force for this event, who better to bring the power of the Phoenix Force under your control than a man who has trained nearly his entire life to defend mutants from a world that both fears and hates them.  The long time leader of the X-Men, Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops!

Cyclops has an Improved Targeting ability called I Can Still See the Dream, allowing him to ignore blocking terrain for line of fire purposes, and after a range combat attack resolves, destroy any blocking terrain he ignored in that attack, and, to make range combat attacks while adjacent to opposing figures.  Along with his Sharpshooter combat ability, letting him ignore opposing figures for line of fire and target adjacent opposing figures with range combat attacks, unfriendly figures within his 8 range will have a hard time escaping Cyclops’ optic blasts.  The Indomitable combat ability will allow Cyclops to act two turns in a row without fear of pushing damage.

Cyclops can be played at two point costs, 150 and 100 points.  He begins play with two clicks of Running Shot to be able to set himself up to lay down cover fire for his team.  As he is best used with his long 8 range, Energy Shield Deflection will make him harder to hit with range combat attacks.   An opening click of Precision Strike will make sure at least a click of damage is dealt to the most armored of foes as well as ignoring Super Senses and the like.  This is followed by a click of Penetrating/ Psychic Blast to completely ignore whatever damage reducer an opposing figure has.  Cyclops has a special power to kick off the front few clicks of his dial called Let’s Put the World Back On Track.  This special power lets Cyclops use Leadership, and when he does, adjacent friendly characters that share a keyword with him are considered to be a lower point value.  

At this point in Cyclops’ dial is his 100 point starting line.  On it, he has his last click of his Let’s Put the World Back On Track special power.  He also gets Precision Strike back for a couple of clicks, and another special power called Ongoing Optic Blasts.  This power says that Cyclops can use Force Blast and Running Shot.   Additionally, when he uses Running Shot, he can use Force Blast as a free action after actions resolve.  On click four, he sees his first click of Range Combat Expert, allowing him to equal his attack and damage values on his previous click, or just increase one or the other by +2.  Toughness will provide Cyclops some damage reduction for these couple of clicks.

Cyclops closes out his dial with a run of Force Blast, letting him take a power action to roll a d6 and knock an adjacent opposing figure back the result, or just add knock back to a successfully hit figure.   He also gains a couple of clicks of Enhancement to increase the damage dealt by friendly adjacent figures for their range attacks.  For his own damage dealing, he has a click of Penetrating/ Psychic Blast in his attack slot and a closing click of Range Combat Expert.  Defensively, Cyclops has another run of Energy Shield Deflection to increase his defense against range attacks, and a closing click of Toughness.

Cyclops, as well as all of the figures in the AvX X-Men Starter, can be attached to the T002 X-Men team base that will be a month 4 participation prize for all players who selected the X-Men as their team for this event.  When Cyclops is attached to the X-Men team base, it can use Leadership, and on a result of 6, it can remove an action token from itself.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers vs. X-Men Storyline Organized Play Event Update

Greetings HeroClix retailers and supporters,

We’ve been listening to your feedback concerning the upcoming Avengers versus X-Men (AvX) storyline organized play series and we wanted to share our thoughts as well as make an announcement of changes we will be making to the program as a result.

First and foremost, we would like to thank all the retailers around the world for your support of the WizKids Organized Play (OP) ProgramOP is the centerpiece of many of our product lines and your continued support is important to us.

AvX is a very exciting program linked to two upcoming starter products: Marvel HeroClix: AvX – Avengers and Marvel HeroClix: AvX – X-Men Starter.  Not only are these the two flagship teams of the Marvel Comics universe, but the recent comic book mini-series this OP program is based upon shook the foundations of both teams to the core.

Therefore we have filled this OP program with compelling competitive and participation prizes that is sure to excite our players, and hopefully you, our retail partners as well.

To that end, we’ve listened carefully to what our retailer and distribution partners have had to say about AvX specifically, and Storyline Organized Play in general.  To that end, we are making the following changes to the AvX storyline event series, effective immediately:

  • We are eliminating any and all purchase requirements connected to the AvX Storyline OP series.  Instead, we will be reviewing store orders against what their demonstrated HeroClix attendance has been for similar events.  Order allocations may occur as a result.
  • We are changing the recommended event templates for AvX from constructed events to a hybrid of sealed/constructed tournaments.  We will be updating the AvX event templates found in the WizKids Event System (WES) shortly to reflect this change.
  • Purchase of an AvX starter (Avengers or X-Men starter) is no longer a prerequisite for participation in the AvX Storyline OP series.  Rather, players will only need to bring one (or more) figure(s) from their selected starter to participate.
  • We are increasing our print run of AvX to more readily accommodate the current levels of demand for storyline OP.

It is our intention that by relaxing the requirements for the AvX Storyline OP will result in a much easier program to participate in, and therefore be more rewarding for all.  Furthermore, by altering the event recommendation templates in the WES, stores will more readily re-coup the costs of participating in the event series.

Lastly, we want to thank you all for your contributions to the incredible growth we’ve experienced with HeroClix.  As many of you are aware, in the past three years HeroClix has grown at an impressive rate and the response to Storyline OP has been spectacular.  The changes we are making to the AvX Storyline OP program, as well as additional changes to Organized Play we’ll announce in the future, will all be designed to both shore up the program to meet the current level of demand as well as increase flexibility for all.

WizKids Games Announces Marvel HeroClix: Avengers vs. X-Men!

Things heat up this winter as the ultimate battle for the fate of the Earth begins as Marvel Comics’ successful Avengers vs. X-Men  (AvX) storyline event comes to the tabletop thanks to HeroClix!  Players will need to choose if they stand with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers, or with the Children of the Atom, the X-Men, in four exciting monthly events in this latest HeroClix Storyline Organized Play event!

AvX 1

In addition to highly desirable competitive prizes exclusive to this Organized Play program, each month participating players can add to their very own collection of the Phoenix Force! Along with the Phoenix Force resource dial, players will collect five Phoenix Force Fragments in order to combine them all into one incredible source of power.  Wield the might of the Phoenix Force in HeroClix!

AvX Starters

So how does one get started? Firstly, two Marvel HeroClix Starter products: AvX – Avengers Starter and AvX – X-Men Starter, kick off the program in November.  Players will select one starter and use the contents to build teams throughout the 4-month program.  All of the figures in these Starters are SwitchClix, which will become very relevant as the AvX Storyline event unfolds.

Each Marvel HeroClix: AvX starter will include six figures, maps, the HeroClix Powers and Abilities Card and Core Rulebook – everything that players have come to expect from HeroClix starters.  However, also included in each starter will be team specific action tokens and custom dice! Show your team pride each month when you play in your store’s AvX events with these fantastic elements!

Beginning in December, players will fight for their chosen team; will they defend the earth from the threat of the Phoenix Force alongside the Avengers? Or will they instead fight for the future of Mutant-kind with the X-Men? Each month players will select one or more figures from the starter associated with their chosen team, and construct a HeroClix force around their chosen figure(s).

As with prior Storyline OP events, AvX rewards participation as well as competitive play; monthly participation prizes allow players to collect fragments of the powerful Phoenix Force HeroClix resource.

That’s not all! During months 2 and 3, players will also receive special participation prizes: Limited Edition figures corresponding to whichever team they’ve chosen to fight alongside!

AvX 5

In month 4 participating players also receive an exclusive Team Base (also corresponding to whichever team they’ve selected to play with).  This Team Base is compatible with the figures from their Starter product as well as a few other goodies found in the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline event!

Competitive Prizes include fan-favorites such as the time travelling warrior Cable, as well as the mutant Hope in all her White Phoenix glory, and more!

AvX 4

The Grand Prize in Month Four is a colossal HeroClix figure, Dark Phoenix Cyclops! This incredible HeroClix figure represents the leader of the X-Men corrupted by the absolute power of the Phoenix Force (based upon the climactic events in the Marvel Comics AvX limited series), and it is dauntingly powerful while standing menacingly on the battlefield at several inches tall!

So sharpen your claws and ready your optic blasts: Avengers vs. X-Men is coming your way this winter and nothing will be the same again!

Marvel HeroClix Wolverine and the X-Men: Cyclops!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome to our inaugural preview article for the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Wolverine and the X-Men set! While the set is not due to release until this August, we just couldn’t wait any longer to start showing off some of the very exciting content in this latest Marvel HeroClix set.  Our first article spotlights that most controversial of mutants, the Phoenix Force-infused leader of the X-MenCyclops!

The first thing we’ll notice about Cyclops’ (057) dial is that it is a different color (it is not black as the sculptural image may imply), this is due to his chase rarity in the Wolverine and the X-Men set.  The second thing we notice is that he possesses two team abilities: predictably, the X-Men team ability and also the Power Cosmic team ability to represent his ascent to a more powerful, cosmic-attuned state.

Cyclops (057) also possesses three different Traits sure to inspire his teammates and make his foes tremble! At 295 points (and full power), Cyclops (057) enjoys the benefits of the Siege Courageous Trait; give Cyclops (057) a double power action and re-position any and all figures with the Phoenix Force keyword anywhere on the map! While Siege Courageous will end your turn after its use, what a way to deny your opponent the ability to retaliate by removing what otherwise would have been a viable target for attack on their turn!

Cyclops’ (057) second Trait, Phoenix Five, grants Leadership to friendly characters with the Phoenix Force keyword and as an additional bonus, if Cyclops (057) is K.O.’ed you can increase any one combat value (not already modified by this effect) on other Phoenix Force keyword characters by +1!  Talk about a pyrrhic victory! K.O. Cyclops, but make his teammates more powerful? Cyclops’ foes will have to time their attacks well to avoid retribution from his Phoenix-empowered allies!

Last, and certainly not least, Cyclops’ (057) We’re Beloved, They’re Mistrusted Trait boosts friendly adjacent figures’ attack values by +1 if they have the X-Men keyword.  As if that weren’t enough, opposing figures with the Avengers keyword modify their attack value by -1!

As we dive into Cyclops’ (057) we see that he has a healthy amount of move and attack alternating between first Running Shot, and then a spread of Hypersonic Speed.  You can then take advantage of Cyclops’ (057) maneuverability by setting up a shot using his Phoenix Force Blast special power! This special power allows Cyclops (057) to target an opposing figure with a ranged combat attack, and include any other opposing characters within two squares of the targeted character in the attack’s area of effect!

Initially, Cyclops (057) can use his cosmic powers to counter his foes’ powers and abilities thanks to two clicks of Outwit.  Mid-dial this gives way to first Ranged Combat Expert and then Support (which pairs nicely with his X-Men team ability!)

Mid- to late-dial Cyclops’ (057)  offensive capabilities shift somewhat as he trades his Phoenix Force Blast special power for Pulse Wave for a couple of clicks.  After than Penetrating/Psychic Blast rounds out the rest of Cyclops’ (057) dial.

Defensively, Cyclops initially reduces damage thanks to the new Invincible power, and then alternates between that, Impervious, and Invulnerability for the rest of his dial.

Playable at either 295 points or 150 points, Cyclops (057) brings a lot of punch to the table for your HeroClix match.  Along with the X-Men team ability, Cyclops also possesses the Power Cosmic team ability ensuring that he doesn’t have to worry about pushing damage or his powers being countered.

Almost predictably, Cyclops possesses the Cosmic, Phoenix Force, Ruler, and X-Men keywords, allowing for easy theme builds within the Wolverine and the X-Men set, and beyond!
