Greetings HeroClix fans!
We continue our series of previews for The Two Towers our next Lord of the Rings HeroClix set, which releases on October 30. To start things off, we visit with Theoden, the king of Rohan who fought against Saruman’s armies at the Battle of Helm’s Deep!
Theoden comes in at 50 only points, which leaves plenty of room for other attackers and support characters on a 300-point force. Theoden also has an Epic Ability called Make for Refuge, which can be used once per game. With Make for Refuge, you may place Theoden and up to 1 friendly character per 150 points of the game’s build total in your starting area.
As the 17th king of Rohan, Theoden begins his dial with a click of Leadership and Willpower. Theoden also has access to a special power called Exiled by the King, which appears on his first three clicks. Exiled by the King lets Theoden use Force Blast as if he occupied any square within 6 squares and line of fire. Once Theoden is off his top click, he gains two clicks of Blades/Claws/Fangs and Perplex. Theoden also switches from Willpower to Barrier on those same two clicks.
The back half of Theoden’s dial sees him ditch Exiled by the King in favor of Plasticity as he grips his opponents close instead of knocking them back. Perplex makes way for Close Combat Expert as he attacks with his mighty sword, Herugrim. Willpower returns for Theoden’s last two clicks.
Theoden’s Make for Refuge Epic Ability makes him a viable option when a retreat to your starting area is necessary. Theoden also has consistent combat values throughout his dial. Additionally, Theoden has the Man, Rohirrim, Ruler and Soldier keywords for ease in team building.
To have some fun with Make for Refuge in Golden Age matches, you can pair up Theoden with Leash from DC HeroClix: Teen Titans. Leash can use the Capture ability on his first three clicks and he also has the Piece of Me trait, which allows him to choose a character at the start of the game. That character then modifies its defense by -2 when Leash targets it with the Capture ability. Once an opposing character has been captured, Theoden can then use Make for Refuge to bring Leash back to your starting area and release the captive character.
Theoden and Leash come to 146 points, which still leaves plenty of room for attackers and support pieces. Let’s see what you can come up with to bring the point total to 300 points!
