Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Immortus

Greetings HeroClix fans, and welcome to another preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set! Today, we dive headfirst into the time stream to explore the villainy of Nathaniel Richards, the future despot, Immortus!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Immortus

A being of immense power and knowledge, Immortus has a trait that symbolizes his ability and desire to reset the board when a battle isn’t going his way. Master of the Time Stream is a once per game double power action that allows you to remove all action tokes from other characters of an equal or lower point value. Now, there is risk with this reward, as it’s not just friendly characters that will have their tokens removed, so plan accordingly!

To go along with that trait, Immortus possesses a number of powers across his 8 click dial that really make him a formidable opponent. With powers like Phasing/Teleport, Running Shot, Super Senses, Outwit, and Probability Control amongst others, Immortus is already geared for major board control and damage potential, and that’s even before you explore his lone special power.

Appearing on four clicks of his Damage, the power And I Know the Past states that Immortus can use Outwit, Probability Control, and Shape Change. And, while those powers alone are wonderful to have, Immortus brings a small bonus to the mix – namely, whenever an opposing character uses Probability Control, that character is dealt 1 unavoidable damage after actions resolve!

Immortus can be played on themed teams possessing the Council of Kangs, Future, Past, or Ruler keywords. He’s also in possession of the Masters of Evil and Minions of Doom team abilities, so pairing him up with characters in possession of advantageous copyable team abilities will really leverage his design. And, at 8 range, you can keep him a little farther back from the main combat, choosing instead to maximize his board control and damage capabilities from afar – and then, you can drop the use of his trait, really causing chaos for your opponent.

That’s all for today, ‘Clix fans! Be sure to join us next time for another exciting preview from the world of HeroClix!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Abyss & Ex Nihilo

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

We’re excited to bring you another preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set coming to your local game store May 2015! In today’s preview we have siblings Abyss and Ex Nihilo, first up, let’s look straight into the abyss!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Abyss

Abyss is one of the Abyss’ that accompany Gardeners who are created by the Builders to help shape the universe. An Abyss is in charge of judging the work of the Gardener including that of her brother.

Abyss is 139 points but is she worth it, or is she just some vast chasm of non-worthiness? She has the Power Cosmic team ability, the Flight symbol, and a single target 4 range. She also has the trait, Invulnerable Gaseous Form. It allows Abyss to use Invulnerability. Her dial has 6 clicks of life, and for all of them she can use Invulnerability because of her trait.

On her top click she starts with Phasing/Teleport, Energy Shield/Deflection, and the special power Molecular Lockdown that says give Abyss a free action and target a character within range and line of fire. Until your next turn, the chosen character can’t use Shape Change or have its combat values modified. So on her top click, Abyss can taxi a friendly character close to the action and use her special power to help friendly characters attacks hit.

On her 2nd click, she gains Mind Control, Shape Change, and the special attack power Creeping Darkness. It states Abyss can use Poison. When she does, deal each adjacent opposing character damage equal to its printed damage value, instead of 1. So on this click she can potentially Mind Control an opposing character with high damage to attack another opposing character having them end their attack next to Abyss. Then on your next turn use her special attack power to Poison them for high damage.

Abyss’s 3rd and 4th clicks are similar to her first 2 clicks sans the Energy Shield/Deflection, just remember to use her traited Invulnerability. Her last 2 clicks change significantly. She has Sidestep, penetrating/Psychic Blast, and Super Senses on both clicks, Shape Change on her 5th click, and her special damage power Molecular Lockdown on her last. So is she worth her points? In the end it’s your decision, but we definitely think so.

Up next, he ain’t heavy, he’s her brother.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Ex Nihilo

Ex Nihilo is one of the Gardeners that were created by the Builders. He stands at 190 points, and like his sister has the Power Cosmic team ability.  He has Improved Movement: ignores hindering terrain and a single target 8 range. His trait Origin Bomb states that once per game give Ex Nihilo a double power action and place an Origin Bomb marker anywhere on the map. At the beginning of your next turn, deal 3 damage to each character and destroy each object, wall, and square of blocking terrain within 3 squares of the marker and then remove this marker from the game.

Ex Nihilo has a dial that is 8 clicks deep and it is a creative dial at that. His top click he possesses Invincible, Outwit, and 2 special powers. His special movement power, Chlorokinesis, says to give Ex Nihilo a power action and place up to 3 hindering terrain markers in distinct, adjacent squares. The first marker must be within line of fire and all markers must be within range.

His special attack power Terrain Manipulation allows Ex Nihilo to use Telekinesis. If he uses it to place an object, he can immediately use Quake as a free action as if he occupied the square of the placed object. Use his Outwit on an opposing character before using this power to make sure it sticks.

Click two brings a change in tactics, Sidestep, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, Invulnerability, and Perplex which is going to hurt your opponent’s characters where they can feel it. Click four and five brings him the ability to hide from opposing characters with his Stealth and if that’s not enough to protect him, his Barrier on both clicks should do the trick. Clicks six and seven show up with Defend along with the special damage power Create Life From Flora. It says to give Ex Nihilo a power action. Make a close combat attack targeting each opposing character that’s occupying or adjacent to hindering terrain, dealing 3 damage to each hit character. How well could this work with a Stealth based team? Conceivably you could deal 3 damage to entire teams with this power! Team him up with a character with Smoke Cloud and your opponent may have to spend a few minutes clicking damage on dials. On his last click he gains Regeneration so he can heal up to half of his dial.

Paired up together Abyss and Ex Nihilo are 329 points, so to play them together you’ll need a 400 point or greater build. Both of them have the Avengers and Cosmic keywords so a theme team shouldn’t be a problem. In addition, Ex Nihilo has the Builders keyword. Except for Sidestep, neither character has the ability to move then attack.  You’ll need to take into account their lack of mobility, but Abyss can taxi Ex Nihilo around the map for attack setup for later turns.

That’s all for this week’s Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble preview, be sure you come back later this week for another exciting preview!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Ragnarok & Thor!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome back for another exciting preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble. Today, we first take a look at an ally of the mighty Thor protector Asgard and Midgard, meet Ragnarok.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Ragnarok

Ragnarok is a clone of Thor created early on during the Civil War event when Reed Richard’s and Hank Pym used DNA from a strand of Thor’s hair that Tony Stark found at a meeting years before.

For a mere 200 points, Ragnarok brings the thunder to bear. His dial is 9 clicks deep and he is powerful enough on each of those clicks to make your opponent realize it is truly the end, Ragnarok. He has the Flight symbol, Indomitable, and an 8 range with 2 targets that will work really well with his 2 opening clicks with Energy Explosion. His trait, Abomination of Midgard, states Ragnarok modifies his attack and damage value by +1 when targeting a character with the Asgardian or Avengers keyword. His keywords are Asgardian, Dark Avengers, and Robot. It won’t be difficult to create a theme team with him.

Ragnarok’s dial is really strong and power wise is consistent all the way down. His top 2 clicks have identical powers, Running Shot, Energy Explosion, Impervious, and Shape Change. His damage value is 5 on both clicks, but with the Energy Explosion, you’ll do 2 splash damage to adjacent opponents and his 12 attack will make sure you hit. His Shape Change paired with Impervious can prevent an attack, or reduce an attacks damage to zero, or at a minimum, reduce it by 2. He is meant to be out on the field in the thick of battle, not mewling behind a support piece like an unworthy coward!

On his 3rd and 4th clicks he is ready to get in close and hit hard with his Charge and Super Strength. With an Ultra Heavy Object, Ragnarok could dish out 7 damage on these clicks! On clicks 4 through 6 he also has Close Combat Expert that will make sure he hits, and hits hard. His defense on all these has gone down to Invulnerability, but by now he will have weakened his foes and they won’t be able to hit him for much damage anyway but if they do, his Pulse Wave on clicks 5 and 6 will make sure they’ll keep their distance.

Ragnarok sees a return of Charge and Penetrating/Psychic Blast on click 7 and a “stop” click special defense power called The Thunder is Mine! It states Ragnarok can use Impervious. When this power is first revealed, stop turning the dial and all opposing characters adjacent to Ragnarok are knocked back a number of squares equal to the damage dealt to Ragnarok this action. This power and its knock back can’t be ignored. For his last two clicks, he possesses Sidestep, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, and Toughness. His attack and damage values at the end are high for his rally call, but his defense value is flagging. He has the will and ability to finish the battle, but a lucky shot can finish him here as well.

Now let’s take a closer look at Thor, son of Odin, initially sent to Midgard (Earth) to teach him humility because of the boastful pride he exhibited in Asgard. He became a founding member of the Avengers and adopted Midgard proclaiming to be its protector.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Thor

Thor has a dual point cost at 228 and 100 points. For both point values, Thor has the Flight and Indomitable symbols along with a range of 8 with 2 targets. His trait, It’s an Avengers World says Thor and adjacent friendly characters with a lower point value and the Avengers keyword can use Energy Explosion. If they are named Captain America or Iron Man, they don’t have to be adjacent or a lower point value. Add some Avengers of a lower point value with Penetrating/Psychic Blast or Precision Strike and vanquish thy foe!

At his 228 point value Thor has an additional 4 clicks of life. All very similar in powers and high in combat values. The top of his dial starts with Running Shot, Pulse Wave, Invincible, and Enhancement. A 10 movement, 12 attack, and 5 damage is going to assure victorious battles ahead. Thor’s next 3 clicks have the same powers except he trades Invincible for Impervious. His combat values stay high as well.

Thor’s 100 point dial starts as more of a close combat specialty with Charge, Invincible, and Empower on its opening click. Thor has Empower on the rest of his clicks except the last and his trait can require adjacency showing that Thor is meant to wield Mjolnir next to his allies in battle not from behind and not alone. His next 3 clicks transition to Flurry and Invulnerable and for his entire dial his damage never falls under a 3, so even then he could deal up to 6 damage with a close combat attack. On his last click Charge comes back, but he also gains a 19 defense with Regeneration that would allow him to heal up to the top click of his 100 point dial if you roll the dice just right, a true hero’s rally!

You could pair both Ragnarok and Thor (at 100 points) for an even 300 point Asgardian keyworded theme team. They could do well together with Ragnarok using Thor’s Empower. Both of them have great range and mobility but a team with Outwit could cause problems for them. Thor really will shine with Avengers keyworded characters because of his trait, and because of his Avengers keyword as well.

Unfortunately, this preview has come to an end! Don’t worry, we will be back next week for more mighty previews from Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Manifold

Greetings HeroClix Fans, and welcome back as we bring you another exciting preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set!  Oh, the places we’ll go with the mutant teleporter known as Manifold!

As one of the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set’s Rare characters, Manifold comes into play at 58 points and has a short range of three squares with one target.  Manifold’s role on your force won’t be that of main attacker, although he does have Hypersonic Speed and Precision Strike on his third and fourth clicks to ping away at opponents.  Instead, Manifold’s power set calls for him to be used as a transport for the rest of your force, then settle in and provide support to your team.

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble: Manifold

Manifold’s first, second, and last clicks feature Barrier to shield him (or other friendly members of your force) by throwing up some blocking terrain markers. On Manifold’s first and last clicks he has Telekinesis to move characters or objects around.  Probability Control is found on Manifold’s second and fifth clicks and allows him to force a reroll of an undesirable roll.  On clicks 3 and 4, where Manifold has Hypersonic Speed and Precision Strike, he gains a boost to his defense values against ranged attacks by using Energy Shield/Deflection.  As the Avengers’ “souped-up teleporter,” Manifold’s speed slot features Phasing/Teleport on all but clicks 3 and 4.

The big gun in Manifold’s arsenal is his trait, Portals of Space and Time.  The first sentence of the trait lets Manifold use the Carry ability.  Additionally, when Manifold does, he may carry up to three friendly characters regardless of their combat symbols if they each share a keyword with him.  Manifold has the Avengers and Secret Warriors keywords.  Portals of Space and Time also helps Manifold protect his teammates after he’s carried them.  The third sentence reads:  “When Manifold is given a move action and actions resolve, you may give him a free action and friendly characters adjacent when this action was given modify their defense values by +1 until your next turn.”  Remember, friendly characters must already be adjacent to Manifold when this free action is given in order to gain the +1 to their defense values.

Again, Manifold won’t be your force’s main attacker and his average attack and damage values reflect this.  However, Manifold’s Portals of Space and Time trait should make him a viable choice for many teams to transport other friendly characters into or away from combat.

That’s all for this sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set!  Stay tuned as we reveal more exciting characters in the days and weeks to come!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Trick Shot

Hello HeroClix fans, and welcome to another exciting preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set! Today, we’re checking in with the brother to the battling bowman Hawkeye – that’s right; it’s everyone’s favorite sharpshooting miscreant, Trick Shot!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Trick Shot

Nearly as skilled in archery as his baby brother, Trick Shot is able to target characters attempting to hide in stealth via his Improved Targeting – Ignores Hindering Terrain ability – this is going to come in especially handy when he’s adjacent to characters in stealth, as he can make a ranged combat attack against them with the Sharpshooter ability. And, whenever he targets a character with the Sharpshooter ability or a range value of 7 or higher, his attack and damage values are modified by +1, thanks to his trait Show You Who’s Better.

Offensively, Barney here is the total package, possessing a range of 8 squares with two targets, and abilities ranging from move and attack powers like Running Shot, to offensive powers designed to wreak havoc like Energy Explosion, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, and Ranged Combat Expert. Of course, his prowess with a bow isn’t the only thing that’s kept Barney alive, and defensively he brings Energy Shield/Deflection, Combat Reflexes, and Willpower. He’s also sporting a special power at the top and bottom of his dial on damage called FBI Agent…and Hawkeye’s Brother, which grants Trick Shot the use of Shape Change and Stealth.

Barney can be part of themed teams based around the Dark Avengers, Thunderbolts, and Police, and sports the Masters of Evil team ability. Be sure to leave room on your squad for the always formidable Thunderbolts Additional Team Ability at 8 points per team member with the Thunderbolts keyword!

That’s it for today, HeroClix fans, so be sure to check back next time when we have even more previews from the Avengers Assemble set. Until then, Perplex when you can, Outwit if you must, but always go for the win!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble- Meet Ronin

Greetings HeroClix Fans, and welcome back as we bring you another exciting preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set!  Today we bring you a character whose identity has been adopted by multiple heroes for times when secrecy was needed.  Please welcome the mysterious Ronin!

A Super Rare in the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set, Ronin has a point value of 109 points.  Ronin’s power set makes him ideal for close combat situations but his printed range of 4 squares and 1 target will come in handy against unwary opponents.  Ronin hits the battlefield with an Improved Movement ability called Masterless Samurai, which lets him ignore hindering terrain when he moves.Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble Ronin

Ronin also comes into play with a trait called Need to be Someone Else For a While, which plays off the character’s multiple identities.  Need to be Someone Else For a While makes Ronin a wild card, which means he can use any team ability possessed by any friendly character on the battlefield.  Additionally, if you give Ronin a Free action you may replace him with any character named Blade, Echo, Hawkeye, Moon Knight or Red Guardian.  The replacement character must be of equal or lesser points than Ronin and enters play on the same click number as Ronin.

Moving on to Ronin’s dial, we see that his first two clicks feature the same layout of powers.  Blades/Claws/Fangs is in his attack slot and Exploit Weakness is in his damage slot.

Ronin’s speed slot features one of his two special powers, Ninja TrainingNinja Training lets Ronin use Charge, Flurry and Stealth.  Charge and Flurry are a popular combination in HeroClix and work together with Blades/Claws/Fangs, giving Ronin the potential to dish out a lot of damage from using all three powers.  Stealth makes for a handy power for Ronin since you’ll want to get close to an opponent for attacks while keeping hindered lines of fire to him blocked – and don’t forget that Ronin’s Masterless Samurai Improved Movement ability means he won’t be slowed when he moves through hindering terrain.

Ronin’s second special power, Multi-faceted Hero, appears in his defense slot and lets him use Toughness and Willpower.

Mid-dial, Ronin drops Blades/Claws/Fangs in favor of a three-click run of Precision Strike, and Exploit Weakness steps aside for OutwitBlades/Claws/Fangs returns on Ronin’s last two clicks.  In his speed slot, Ronin ends his dial with Leap/Climb while defensively he uses Super Senses to protect himself before resuming the use of Multi-faceted Hero.

To aid you in themed team-building, Ronin has the Avengers and Martial Artist keywords but makes for a viable addition to many teams with his aggressive power set and combat values.  The key to Ronin’s Need to be Someone Else For a While trait is in knowing when to pull the trigger to replace him with Blade, Echo, Hawkeye, Moon Knight or Red Guardian.

That’s all for this sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set!  Stay tuned as we reveal more exciting characters in the days and weeks to come!

Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble: Nova

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Welcome to the first fantastic preview from the upcoming Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set!  Today, we have one of the original members of the New Warriors, the interstellar officer of the Nova Corps, Ol’ Bucket Head himself, Nova!

 Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble: Nova

Nova once again brings one of our more popular traits back to the forefront, Share Through the Worldmind.  This trait allows for characters friendly to Nova with the Nova Corps keyword the use of Empower; however, this use of Empower can only affect other friendly characters with the Nova Corps keyword.  With so many characters now possessing that keyword stretching back to the Marvel HeroClix Galactic Guardians set, you’ll be able to construct an incredibly synchronous Nova Corps squad to take advantage of the traits shared by members of the Corps!  And don’t forget the Nova Helmet relic, which grants those holding the relic the Flight ability, Charge, and the Nova Corps keyword!

Coming in at 141 points over seven clicks, Nova is a flying powerhouse, sporting a range of seven squares with two targets.  Nova begins his dial with an 11 movement and Hypersonic Speed, before moving through Running Shot, a return to Hypersonic Speed, before closing out with three clicks of Phasing/Teleport.  Consistent attack values ranging from 11 to 9 are coupled with Energy Explosion at the top of his dial and Penetrating/ Psychic Blast in the middle of his dial, and towards the end.

Defensively, Nova is built to take a few hits, beginning with Invincible, before running down through Invulnerability, Toughness and, finally, a sneaky click of Regeneration that will take your opponent off guard if he’s not paying attention to the Human Rocket.  On his damage, Nova opens with a baseline 4 for his first two clicks, before moving onto 3 damage until his last click, which has 2.  Nova only has one power on his damage, a special ability called The Human Rocket.  This power grants Nova the option to be given a free action, which in turn allows him the use of Improved Movement – Ignores and Destroys Blocking Terrain with a speed value locked at 5.  That movement might not seem like much, but destroying walls and creating either escape points or access points for your forces can be a major game changer!

Aside from the aforementioned Nova Corps keyword, Nova can also be a part of themed teams featuring the Avengers, Cosmic, New Warriors, or Police keywords.  Be sure to make room on your team for ATAs like Avengers Response Unit, Mighty Avengers, or Secret Avengers.  He also brings the Avengers team ability to the table.  We’re sure that with his selection of keywords and smorgasbord of powers, you’ll be able to fit Nova onto a great team!

That’s all for today, Clix fans!  Until next time, empower your allies to victory!

2015 Marvel HeroClix Convention Exclusives

Today we preview the two 2015 Marvel HeroClix Convention figures available for sale at conventions and special events— starting with the WizKids U.S. Nationals Championship Event at Games & Stuff in Glen Burnie, MD next weekend April 11-12.

First up is the mightiest magician of the Marvel Universe— Doctor Strange!

Marvel HeroClix Convention Exclusive Doctor Strange

On his first click, Doctor Strange’s Cloak of Levitation (Running Shot) gives him the ability to move and make a ranged attack, his Bolts of Balthakk (Penetrating/Psychic Blast) allows his ranged attack to punch through damage-reducing powers on his targets, his Mystical Shield (Super Senses) can help him to avoid attacks and the Orb of Agamotto (Probability Control) will allow him to reroll attacks or force his opponents to reroll their attacks.  Later on in his dial, Doctor Strange becomes a bit more defensive by granting the Shield of Seraphim (Defend) to help protect his allies and the Serum of Seraphim (Support) to heal his allies that have been hurt in battle.

But the Sorcerer Supreme has many more spells that he can conjure up—to represent the depth of Doctor Strange’s mystical skills, this figure comes with a special d20 that will give him access to a variety of powers and special game effects listed on the back of his character card.  Once per turn, Doctor Strange may be given a free action to roll the d20 and depending on the result of the roll, Doctor Strange can use the indicatedpower or ability. With all of the magical tricks available to Doctor Strange, he is the quintessential “Swiss-army knife” for your HeroClix team!

Second up, we travel into deep space for the greatest minds of the Kree Empire—the Supreme Intelligence.

Marvel HeroClix Convention Exclusive Supreme Intelligence

As a being that resides in a containment unit, the playable character dial for the Supreme Intelligence does not have the ability to move (as represented by his 0 Speed value), but this does not limit his psychic abilities. Supreme Intelligence’s Omni-Wave Projector trait allows him to target opponents anywhere on the map with ranged combat attacks—although his damage is reduced if he needs to stretch his psychic powers outside of his normal range and line of fire.  Opponents can prevent the Supreme Intelligence’s ability to make these mental attacks from afar by moving one of their characters of 100 points or more next to him—but being In the Presence of the Supreme Intelligence can be just as much of a danger, as opposing characters adjacent to the Supreme Intelligence are given an action token at the beginning of his turn. As a master of planning and strategy, the Supreme Intelligence bolsters his forces through his Empower Kree Agents power, increasing their combat values through Empower, Enhancement and Perplex.  As the collection of its greatest minds and leader of the Kree Empire, the Supreme Intelligence’s Millenia of the Kree’s Best, Distilled damage power allows him to use Leadership and Outwit—and when he does use Outwit, he can immediately use it twice more!

Marvel HeroClix Convention Exclusive Supreme Intelligence Resource

Supreme Intelligence is a SwitchClix figure that comes with an alternate dial that allows it to be played as a resource (representing its ability to establish a mental link with other beings to guide their actions).  When the Supreme Intelligence is played as a resource, it is assigned to a character of 50 pointsor more—or a character of any point value if it has the Kree keyword. The character that is assigned this mental link will have access to any of the standard powers showing on the Supreme Intelligence’s dial. The resource dial is clicked once at the end of each turn and up to two additional times if the assigned character made a successful attack during that turn, so the powers available will change throughout the course of the game.  If you are fortunate enough to get the resource dial up to click 19, the Supreme Intelligence transfers his powers entirely over to your Kree agent with its Manifest Through You special power. This power allows you to replace the assigned character with the Supreme Intelligence character dial on the same click number.  Now we will see who is truly the Supreme Intelligence!

We look forward to seeing you this convention season!  Pre-registration for the WizKids U.S. Nationals Championship Event closes soon, so register now for your chance to play and your chance to pick up two of the 2015 Marvel HeroClix Convention Exclusives: Doctor Strange and Supreme Intelligence!
