Interview with Patrick Yapjoco – 2016 HeroClix World Champion

hcwc2

HeroClix Fans,

We want to take this opportunity to congratulate Patrick Yapjoco on winning this year’s HeroClix World Championship and earning the title of the 2016 HeroClix World Champion. He went up against some of the best HeroClix players from all around the world and came out on top. Let’s see what he had to say about the event, his experience, and HeroClix as a whole.

WizKids Interview with Patrick Yapjoco

2016-PatrickYapjoco- 2016 HeroClix World Champion

Name: Patrick Yapjoco

WIN ID: Spawn

Location: Orange, CA

Favorite Venue: Majestix

Q. How does it feel to have won the HeroClix World Championship?

It feels great.  Of course, nothing beats the first time winning it, but this was sweet because it showed me that I could still come out on top, even after a mediocre previous year.  The event was awesome, everyone was great and the Judging Staff was top-notch.

Q. How long have you been playing HeroClix?

I have been playing since the Marvel HeroClix: Infinity Challenge set, but I took a break when Marvel HeroClix: Ultimates came out.  I came back during Marvel HeroClix: Hammer of Thor, when NECA took over.

Q. What first brought you into HeroClix?

I was an avid comic book and action figure collector, and I also played other games sparingly.  I walked into my local comic shop one day and decided to buy a starter set because the game seemed like a cross between all three of my interests.

Q. How did you work out your winning build?

My teammate came up with a skeleton for the Quinjet team.  We decided that we should at least look at it, since everyone thought it was going to be the next big thing once the first rotation hit.  After some extensive testing and tweaking to the ID Cards and support pieces, I pretty much came to my current iteration of the team and took it to a WizKids Open Regional, which I won.  I also played it in Nationals and finished in 2nd place, so I just decided to stick with it for Worlds as well.

Q. What did you like about your team?

I love the versatility of my team.  I have so many options to choose from and a variety of ways to win; my team can adapt to virtually any situation.  It’s just a pleasure to play because almost every game feels different due to the ID Cards.

Q. What would you have changed?

I’m not sure if I would change anything. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right? When the next rotation hits on July 1st, I will have to take out the Nova ID Card, since that Nova will not be legal for Modern Age anymore.  Black Canary could take its place, but I don’t know yet.

Q. What were the keys to your success/ what was your main strategy?

I think my main strategy is that I am familiar with my team and all the options at my disposal.  I also brainstorm plans prior to the game and practice executing them. Assessing the threats at each moment in the game and deciding the optimal plays aided me immensely as well.

Q. Did you enjoy the competition?

I absolutely loved it.  This is the best part of the game, in my opinion, getting to test your mettle against the game’s best.

Q. What were your fellow competitors like?

They are the best and I couldn’t ask for any better sportsmanship. Despite the stakes and the high-level play, the players really make the atmosphere an absolute joy to be in.  Everyone was nice and just great all-around people.

Q. How much did you prepare for the event?

I have been preparing since I lost my title last year, to be honest.  I have been traveling to different high-level events to tune up for Worlds this year.  That started around October and my teammates and I have been hard at work in testing, theory-crafting, and keeping up with the shifts and changes in the metagame.

Q. How confident did you feel coming in?

I felt really good because I believe that my version of Quinjet could hang with the best of them. I was confident that I could play it as well, if not better, than any other player at the tournament, and that would hopefully give me an advantage.

Q. How do you feel about the current metagame?

After the Marvel HeroClix: Guardians of the Galaxy set rotates out, the metagame will be amazing!  Zombies and Super Skrull were dominating the format (just look at the Worlds event), and it will be nice to see a new format emerge.  Of course, Quinjet will still be the king, but it is easier to deal with than Zombies or Super Skrull, in my opinion, so it will be healthy format.

Q. Can you give any insights for new players on how to become better players?

I would say to really  just keep testing and practicing.  That’s the only way to get better. Repetition.  You’ll get the feel of the game and the flow if you just keep playing.  Also, keep up with the current metagame,  talk with other top players, and pick their brains because no one person knows everything about this game.

Q. Any shoutouts or is there anything else you would like to add?

I would like to thank my teammates, Kevin Afrooz, Justino Jimenez, Kris Flores, and Chris Pribanick, as they have been the support group in helping me win (and they let me borrow their figures!).  I wouldn’t have won without their help.

Tournament Legal Maps – 2016 HeroClix U.S. Nationals & World Championship Events

HeroClix Road to Worlds

Tournament Legal Maps for 2016 HeroClix U.S. Nationals and World Championship Event

The HeroClix U.S. National Championship and World Championship events will be taking place at Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio, June 15th-19th, 2016. In addition to all of the HeroClix premier events, there will be a variety of side events throughout the weekend for HeroClix and other WizKids games giving players a chance to win rare prizes and convention exclusives will be available for purchase—for more details visit the 2016 WizKids U.S. Nationals and World Championship announcement.

PLEASE NOTE: The HeroClix U.S. National Championships will only be open to players that qualified from the 2016 Regional Championship events.

For players in the 2016 HeroClix U.S Nationals and HeroClix World Championship events, there is a map menu for what maps you can use in these events. These tournament legal maps will be used in both the qualifier rounds and the final rounds. The 2016 HeroClix U.S. Nationals and World Championship Map Menu is listed below in the article.

Map Selection

When filling out their Army Sheet, players may indicate up to three (3) tournament legal maps that they may choose to use if and when they are given the option to choose a map for their game.  When selecting a map for a round, players have the option of:

  1. Using the map that is on the table they are assigned (see Maps Provided by WizKids below). Players may choose either the front or the back face of the map that is already on their table. [NOTE: Players must use the map on the table they are assigned and may not take/swap maps from/with any nearby tables.]

–or–

  1. Selecting one of the tournament legal maps that they recorded on their Army Sheet. PLEASE NOTE: When recording a map option to list on the Army Sheet and when selecting maps for play, players may only list/select one playable side of a map and may only select the indicated side of the map.

Example: The double-sided map that was part of the Marvel HeroClix: Avengers Assemble set has two playable sides—Arcade’s Arena & Avenger’s Compound. If a player lists Arcade’s Arena on their Army Sheet (and does not have Avenger’s Compound listed), that player may only select to use the Arcade’s Arena side of the map—they may not use the side that was not listed on their Army Sheet (Avenger’s Compound).

If a player does not have any tournament legal maps listed on their Army Sheet, they may only select the front or back face of the map on their assigned table.

Maps Provided by WizKids

The maps on the tables will be a limited assortment of a random selection of maps from the Map Menu.  WizKids does not guarantee to have any one specific map available for use.  If a player wants to use a specific map from the map menu, they should bring that map with them to the event.

HeroClix Premium Maps

During each round of every HeroClix Qualifier or Championship, once players are seated, ten tables will be randomly selected and players at those tables will be given the opportunity to play on one of four HeroClix Premium Maps.

When players at these tables are selecting a map to play on, they may select to use the HeroClix Premium Map offered (see below under HeroClix Premium Maps in Map Menu), instead of choosing a normal map. If a HeroClix Premium Map is selected in this way, the player who wins the match gets to keep the HeroClix Premium Map. If the player selecting the map does not wish to choose the HeroClix Premium Map, they may still select a map from the maps listed on their Army Sheet or use either face of the map on their assigned table, but neither player will win the Premium Map that was offered.

2015 HeroClix Team World Champions: Fail Boat

HeroClix Fans!

Meet the 2015 HeroClix Team World Champions: Fail Boat! See what they had to say about the event, their experience and the HeroClix community here. Do you have what it takes to take them on next year at the 2016 World Championships?

2015 HeroClix Team World Champion: Fail Boat

Q: How does it feel to be named 2015 Team World Champion in HeroClix?

Each of us has been playing for a long time and we have all come close to winning a World Championship, so it was great to finally win one. It’s exciting to have won and a little surreal that we get to design a figure that others will actually get to play.

Q: How did you all meet and come up with your team name?

We have a large group of very good players in Northeast Ohio, but we prefer to fly under the radar so we don’t have an official team name. Instead, we come up with ridiculous team names that make fun of our friends in good humor. We have a friend that we frequently say is “captain of the fail boat”, so the name Fail Boat just stuck around.

Q: How did you guys work out your winning build and what was your main strategy going in as a team?

As a team, we play well together since we all have different play and team building styles. Tim prefers to play a balanced team, while Nick plays very aggressively and Derek tends to play teams more defensively. When you are pulling 6 boosters worth of figures, there are enough figures to go around to fit each of these strategies, so we just let each of us gravitate towards the figures that best fit our play styles.

Q: What were your fellow competitors like?

One of the biggest and best surprises to new players is how great the environment and community are, even in a World Championship setting. You are playing for a big prize yet everyone is relaxed and having a great time. We have been playing for a long time and have met a ton of great people that we look forward to seeing and playing each and every year. Despite the horror stories, the “uber-competitive” guy that ruins the environment is very, very hard to find in HeroClix, even in the competitive scene.

Q: What first brought you to HeroClix and how long have you each been playing it?

Tim has been playing the longest as he started back in Clobberin Time. Derek started back in the Sinister days and Nick has been playing since Avengers.

Q: Do you play together often? If so, where do you all meet to play?

We get together to play very frequently, at least twice a month. When we get together and play, we very rarely play the meta, we generally play fun, thematic teams. There are a ton of venues in Northeast Ohio and a lot of times we will meet up at someone’s house after a tournament to play a few fun games. We alternate where we play, but generally end up at Tim’s “ginger mansion”.

Q: What strategy or aspect of your game play as a team do you believe lead to your victory over the other teams?

Since we spend a lot of time playing fun, thematic teams, we tend to know a lot of different pieces really, really well, not just the ones in the meta. We know most of the dials from these sets which helps when team building. We know which figures are worth fielding from playing them. And, it helps when you play against a piece you have seen many times before since you know what powers it gets and how many clicks their dials have.

Q: Do you plan on fighting for your title and perhaps returning next year?

We are fortunate enough to only be a short 2 hour drive from Columbus, so we will absolutely plan on being at Origins to try and defend our title!

Q: What advice would you give others trying to achieve the Team World Champions title?

We strongly encourage everyone who is even remotely considering trying to play in World’s to give the team championship a try. Everyone is on the same play field since it is a sealed event and you get to play with some of your closest friends. In the end, you will find that the Heroclix community is a truly great group of players and even if you don’t win, you will have a lot of fun.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thanks to everyone in Northeast Ohio that has supported us through the years, we are very proud to bring home a World Championship.
