The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers: Gandalf and Shadowfax!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Today’s preview from the upcoming release of The Lord of the Rings HeroClix: The Two Towers is none other than the Grey Wizard reborn! We are pleased to present Gandalf and Shadowfax from The Two Towers HeroClix Rider packs!

034a-Gandalf-and-Shadowfax

One of the first things you may notice is that Gandalf and Shadowfax possess the Transporter ability, allowing them to carry friendly figures as well as use the Move and Attack ability.  However, their Lord of the Mearas special power (located on the early-dial) allows Gandalf and Shadowfax to use Hypersonic Speed rather than the Move and Attack special ability, allowing them to forgo any penalty to their attack value.

Early dial, Gandalf and Shadowfax also possess a special power on the attack slot called Beacon of Hope.  Beacon of Hope allows Gandalf and Shadowfax to use Pulse Wave, and if their successful attack roll result is doubles, any hit characters are also assigned an action token.  And while not available on their initial click, the White Wizard special power gives Gandalf and Shadowfax access to Outwit, Perplex, and Probability Control, three powers that are always useful on your HeroClix force!

Mid-dial, Gandalf and Shadowfax switch tactics slightly as Lord of the Mearas is replaced with Phasing/Teleport, Beacon of Hope gives way to Penetrating/Psychic Blast, and the White Wizard special power is replaced with standard Perplex.

Initially, Gandalf and Shadowfax enjoy superior protection from damage thanks to Impervious, and then mid-dial they receive some protection from Invulnerability.  Late-dial, Gandalf and Shadowfax gain Running Shot and the Beacon of Hope special power reappears and Regeneration replaces Invulnerability on the defense slot.

034B034C-Shadowfax

One of the cooler elements about the mounted figures is the option to use the Split/Merge ability to separate into any qualifying Gandalf figure and the enclosed Shadowfax bystander token.  Shadowfax possesses Hypersonic Speed and some other goodies on his initial side (034b)! The Mount trait allows Shadowfax to predictably use the Carry ability, while the Lord of All Horses special power allows Shadowfax to use Invulnerability, and if Shadowfax takes damage, instead of being K.O.’ed players will instead flip Shadowfax to the other side (034c) revealing a different “dial” for Shadowfax! Hypersonic Speed gives way to Charge, while Shadowfax also gains Quake and Super Senses!

Lastly, and certainly not least, let’s not overlook Gandalf and Shadowfax’s Epic Action ability, Turning of the Tide, which allows Gandalf and Shadowfax to use Outwit and then use it again as a free action for every 200 points of the game build!

The Animal, Fellowship, Herald, Maiar, Mystical, and Ringbearer keywords offer multiple opportunities for theme team builds in standard or epic games, and Gandalf and Shadowfax will always be a potent force on the battlefield thanks to consistent combat values and a great power selection.

Thanks for joining us for our latest The Lord of the Rings HeroClix: The Two Towers preview.  Be sure to check out the set’s release at your friendly local game or comic book stores later this week!

The Lord of the Rings HeroClix The Two Towers: Aragorn!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

Today’s Lord of the Rings HeroClix: The Two Towers preview begins with Aragorn. Let’s take a look at this Ranger who protects others from danger!

001-Aragorn

At a lean 84 points, Aragorn brings a lot to the table. He possesses Improved Movement ignores hindering terrain, Indomitable, and a 6 range with a single target.  He also has the epic action Tracking Friends that allows you to give Aragorn an epic action and choose up to one adjacent friendly character for each 200 points of the games build total. Place Aragorn adjacent to any friendly character within 10 squares and then place the chosen friendly characters adjacent to Aragorn. This is a great way to get your characters quickly into action.

Aragorn starts his dial with Charge, Toughness, and the special attack power Leader of Men that allows Aragorn to use Leadership and adjacent characters can use Willpower. Aragorn can use Perplex, but only to modify the attack powers of friendly characters.

On his second click he trades Toughness with Combat Reflexes, which he keeps for the rest of his dial. He also acquires Outwit for the next 3 clicks.  This is a great click that really lets Aragorn show his worth. You can declare his epic action Tracking Friends, place him adjacent to a character up to 10 squares away, and then place the chosen friendly characters adjacent to Aragorn. He can then use his Outwit on an opposing character, and then use his Perplex granted by Leader of Men to enhance an adjacent friendly characters attack value. Then start attacking!

On Aragorn’s third click, he swaps out his special power for Blades/Claws/Fangs that goes well with his Charge and Outwit as well. On click 4 he loses Charge but his 6 range will help keep him in the fray. Try a team with multiple #013 Elven Archers from the Lord of the Rings HeroClix: The Fellowship of the Ring set.  The Elven Archers can use Enhancement and ignore each other for line of fire to bring along for Aragorn’s epic action.

Lord of the Rings HeroClix The Two Towers: Eowyn and Eomer!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome travelers, we go today in to Middle-Earth to preview those from the upcoming The Two Towers HeroClix set. Eomer and Eowyn are the children of Theodwyn and were adopted by Theoden, king of the Rohirrim, after the tragic death of their parents.

 020-Eowyn

Eowyn has a trait called Simbelmyne. This will allow Eowyn to once per turn, when a friendly character is KO’d, she may place a hindering terrain marker in the square it occupied before being removed from the map.

Eowyn has a 5 click dial for 40 points starting with 2 clicks of Charge and ending with 2 clicks of Flurry. For her defense she has 3 clicks of Combat Reflexes and ends with 2 clicks of Willpower.

Eowyn has a special power called Providing Comfort. Eowyn can use Support; when she does you may treat any roll of doubles (other than a critical miss) as a result higher than the target’s defense value, but when you do she can heal a maximum of 2 damage.

021-Eomer

Eomer, Eowyn’s brother, has a 6 click dial for 68 points. His trait called Rider of Rohan, allows Eomer to use the Carry ability.

Eomer starts out with 4 clicks of Charge and Toughness all the way down his dial.

Eomer’s special power is called Marshall of the Horse-Lords. Eomer and adjacent friendly characters modify their attack value by +1 when making a close combat attack. If that character has moved this turn, modify its damage value by +1 for this attack as well.

Eowyn and Eomer share 3 of the same keywords with Man, Rohirrim and Soldier. Eowyn also has Ruler.

Thanks for reading! We will continue to bring you figures from the upcoming The Two Towers HeroClix set. Until then, Shape Change for the Win!!

Lord of the Rings HeroClix The Two Towers: Galadhrim Elven Soldier and Haldir!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

For today’s Lord of the Rings HeroClix: The Two Towers preview, we bring word from Lord Elrond of Rivendell.  An alliance once existed between Elves and Men. Long ago they fought and died together.  When Saruman’s forces marched upon Helm’s Deep, Haldir and a number of Galadhrim Elven Soldiers arrived to honor that allegiance and fight alongside men once again!

002-Galadhrim-Elven-Soldier

Let’s first take a look at the Galadhrim Elven Soldier!  Coming in at 32 points, the Galadhrim Elven Soldier has a range of six squares and can target one character with its ranged attacks.  On each of its four clicks Galadhrim Elven Soldier has a special power in its defense slot called Hold the Line.  This special power lets Galadhrim Elven Soldier use Energy Shield/Deflection.  Additionally, Galadhrim Elven Soldier modifies its defense by +1 when he is targeted with a close action and is adjacent to a friendly character with a shared keyword.  Galadhrim Elven Soldier has two keywords, Elf and Soldier.

The Galadhrim Elven Soldier is primarily a ranged attacker on his first two clicks, with Leap/Climb in his speed slot enabling him to get into position for an attack and Ranged Combat Expert in his damage slot boosting either his damage or attack values (or both values).  On his last two clicks, Galadhrim Elven Soldier drops Leap/Climb in favor of Flurry as he fights in close combat.

Leading the Galadhrim Elven Soldier into battle is Haldir, who comes into play at 60 and has the Elf and Soldier keywords.

025-Haldir

Haldir also has an Epic Ability called Eleven Archery.  Once per game, Haldir can be given an epic action to choose up to 1 friendly character per 200 points of the game’s build total.  Then during your turn you may give each chosen character a power action to make two ranged combat attacks as free actions.  If Haldir is one of the chosen characters, his power action may be given as a free action.

Haldir has Leap/Climb on all but his last two clicks which allows him to move as needed among his troops.  Haldir also has a special power in his attack slot called Target Their Armor’s Weak Points! that appears on all but his last click.

When Haldir is on the front half of his dial, he has Defend to share his defense values with adjacent friendly characters.  Haldir also has Enhancement to increase damage dealt by adjacent friendly characters who make ranged attacks.  The back half of Haldir’s dial features WillpowerHaldir also has a range of eight squares and one target for his ranged attacks.

Lord of the Rings HeroClix The Two Towers: Uruk-Hai and Uruk-Hai Berserker!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome travelers, we go today into Middle-Earth to preview figures from the upcoming The Two Towers HeroClix set. The largest, strongest and meanest of all the orc folk are the Uruk-Hai.

005-Uruk-Hai

For 40 points the Uruk-Hai starts off with Charge, Willpower, and Exploit Weakness, sure to bring alarm to any Fellowship. Once in the face of an opponent, Uruk-Hai gains Plasticity and his damage value jumps to 3. At the end of his dial, Uruk-Hai switches to Flurry, providing him twice the number of close combat attacks, and Toughness, giving the ability to reduce damage.

Uruk-Hai are designed to swam an opponent and with Brute, Forces of Sauron and Isengard as their keywords it should be easy to build a formidable theme based team.

011-Uruk-Berserker

At 60 points you could add in some Uruk Berserkers. The Uruk Berserker has a trait called Berserkers Fury; this will make it so any successful attack roll made by Uruk Berserker where the result is doubles is a critical hit.

Uruk Berserker starts off with Charge, Quake, Combat Reflexes, and a 3 damage value. Uruk Berserker can use Charge and Quake together, to run up on a group of unsuspecting Halflings, and if you successfully hit with the roll of doubles, watch them all go flying.

On click 3, Uruk Berserker gains Plasticity, Toughness and Exploit Weakness. Tying up opposing figures with the ability to ignore their damage reducers will make these guys hard to handle.  On their last three clicks Uruk Berserker can use Close Combat Expert and ends his dial how it began with a 3 damage value. The Uruk Berserker might not have Willpower but with 7 clicks of life and stats like these he seems very push-able.

Uruk Berserker has the Brute, Forces of Sauron, Isengard and Warrior keywords and could easily be paired up with a Uruk-Hai to make 100 point two orc teams.

Lord of the Rings HeroClix The Two Towers: Theoden!

Greetings HeroClix fans!

We continue our series of previews for The Two Towers our next Lord of the Rings HeroClix set, which releases on October 30.  To start things off, we visit with Theoden, the king of Rohan who fought against Saruman’s armies at the Battle of Helm’s Deep!

026-Theoden

Theoden comes in at 50 only points, which leaves plenty of room for other attackers and support characters on a 300-point force.  Theoden also has an Epic Ability called Make for Refuge, which can be used once per game.  With Make for Refuge, you may place Theoden and up to 1 friendly character per 150 points of the game’s build total in your starting area.

As the 17th king of Rohan, Theoden begins his dial with a click of Leadership and WillpowerTheoden also has access to a special power called Exiled by the King, which appears on his first three clicks.  Exiled by the King lets Theoden use Force Blast as if he occupied any square within 6 squares and line of fire.  Once Theoden is off his top click, he gains two clicks of Blades/Claws/Fangs and PerplexTheoden also switches from Willpower to Barrier on those same two clicks.

The back half of Theoden’s dial sees him ditch Exiled by the King in favor of Plasticity as he grips his opponents close instead of knocking them back.  Perplex makes way for Close Combat Expert as he attacks with his mighty sword, Herugrim.  Willpower returns for Theoden’s last two clicks.

Theoden’s Make for Refuge Epic Ability makes him a viable option when a retreat to your starting area is necessary.  Theoden also has consistent combat values throughout his dial.  Additionally, Theoden has the Man, Rohirrim, Ruler and Soldier keywords for ease in team building.

To have some fun with Make for Refuge in Golden Age matches, you can pair up Theoden with Leash from DC HeroClix: Teen TitansLeash can use the Capture ability on his first three clicks and he also has the Piece of Me trait, which allows him to choose a character at the start of the game.  That character then modifies its defense by -2 when Leash targets it with the Capture ability.  Once an opposing character has been captured, Theoden can then use Make for Refuge to bring Leash back to your starting area and release the captive character.

Theoden and Leash come to 146 points, which still leaves plenty of room for attackers and support pieces.  Let’s see what you can come up with to bring the point total to 300 points!

Lord of the Rings HeroClix The Two Towers: Smeagol and Gollum!

Greetings HeroClix Fans!

Welcome as we take first look at the upcoming Lord of the Rings HeroClix: Two Towers set.   Today, we look at the best friend a traveling Hobbit could have.  And also possibly the worst enemy.  We are pleased to present the ever-so-helpful-to-nice-little-Hobbitses, Smeagol!

006-Smeagol

For 55 points, Smeagol can be played in theme using the Hobbit, Monster, and Ringbearer keywords.  He has an epic action called Good Smeagol Always Helps!  This allows you to give Smeagol an epic action to choose a keyword that an opposing character possesses.  Smeagol can now use Outwit targeting one opposing character per 200 points of the build total if they have the chosen keyword.

Smeagol can get to where he will be of the most use to your force with Leap/Climb.  In this stretch of his dial, he has a special power called Sworn to Serve the Master of the Precious.  This allows him to use Perplex normally, or to modify the same combat value of every character with the Ringbearer keyword within 6 squares and line of fire by +1.  A couple of clicks of Super Senses will let Smeagol attempt to avoid attacks, before switching to Combat Reflexes for the rest of his dial.  On his last couple of clicks, Flurry will let Smeagol make two separate close combat attacks.  Or, he can choose to use Support to heal a friendly character.

Smeagol sometimes lets the darker side of himself take over.  This is represented with a trait called Morph: Gollum, which reads “Give Smeagol a move or close combat action that deals no pushing damage; after actions resolve, replace this character with Two Towers #007 Gollum on the same click number.”

007-Gollum

Gollum also costs 55 points and can be built onto theme teams using the Brute, Monster, and  Ringbearer keywords.  He also has an epic action ability called Soft and Quick as Shadows.  This allows you to give Gollum and epic action to let him and 1 character per 100 points of the games build total to use Stealth until the beginning of your next turn.

Gollum can move about the battle field with ease using Leap/Climb.  Once in position, he can use Outwit to deprive an opposing figure of a key power.   On his second click, Gollum gets a special power for the rest of his dial called Liar. Thief. Murderer!   This special power lets him use Poison, and characters with the Ringbearer or Fellowship keyword are dealt 2 damage instead of 1.  Defensively, a couple opening clicks of Super Senses will give him the opportunity to avoid attacks.  For the rest of his dial, he will be harder to hit in close combat with Combat Reflexes.

Like  Smeagol , Gollum has a morph trait, this time called Morph: Smeagol , which reads “Give Gollum a move or close combat action that deals no pushing damage; after actions resolve, replace this character with Two Towers #006 Smeagol on the same click number.”

Be sure to check back soon (perhaps later today?) for our next preview from the upcoming Lord of the Rings HeroClix: Two Towers set!
