GenCon Update… Friday Night’s Alright for Fighting

Are you ready to have a fight on Friday night?  We are happy to announce that we can have a special release tourney for Street Fighter at GenCon 2011.  On Friday night at 6 PM, we will hold a 32 player sealed Street Fighter event.  Can you build a 300 point team of Street Fighter figures and win the tourney and declare yourself the winner of the Friday Night Fight!  Details are below:

HeroClix Street Fighter “Friday Night Fight” Event:

Want to play with Street Fighter before your friends and prove you’ve got what it takes to be the best fighter?  This event will utilize 8 single figure boosters from the Street Fighter expansion from which you will build a 300 point team.  Prizes for this event will be from a pool of Moonstone, Wonder Women, and extra single figure boosters of Street Fighter.  Due to the last minute nature of this event, it can’t be listed on the GenCon website.  There will be a sign-up list for this event starting at 5 PM on Friday night.  If demand is high for this event, we will have a free raffle for the seats in this event.  Can you Hurricane Kick the competition to the street?

Cost for this event will be $24 (12 Generic Tickets for each player).

Availability/Schedule:  Friday 6 PM

That’s all I’ve got for now but what other surprises could GenCon have in store for our players.  You’ll just have to wait and see…

On the Road…GenCon Update, It’s in the Cards?

After the stellar turnout at Origins, we want to continue the trend at GenCon 2011 and also update some of the info for the convention.  I was just clearing off my desk when I came across these cards:

One of the nice surprises that we were able to spring on the player’s at Origins was the presence of participation prizes in the form of physical copies of the Print n Play cards.  Well, that is going to continue at GenCon.  Every player who plays in a WizKids event at GenCon will receive a Print n Play card as a participation prize.  Even players in our Open Play event will be prized with a Print n Play card.  Can you collect all 47?

After the quick sellout of Grinders at Origins, we wanted to let players know the set-up for Worlds Grinders at GenCon.

HeroClix World Championship “Grinder” Qualifying Event:

Want to play in Worlds and prove you’ve got what it takes to be the BEST?  Worlds Grinders are an 8-person, 3 round sealed tourney.  This event will utilize one booster each from the Captain America and DC 75th Anniversary expansions.  In the third round, 2 undefeated players will be playing off and the winner gets a seat at the World Semi-Finals on Saturday and his choice between 2 random figures from a pool of Horsemen of Apocalypse, Moonstone, and Wonder Woman and the loser gets the other figure.  Players can participate in as many sealed grinders as they want in order to try to earn one of the slots in the semi-finals.  If you win a grinder, you can no longer play in additional grinders.  We will run at least 32 grinders on Thursday and 32 grinders on Friday and will have additional product available to run more (of course we can only run grinders if we have the 8 players necessary to play in the event so be sure to bring your friends to play with you).  In the event that grinders are selling quickly, we will keep product aside to run some grinders during the late hours.  If demand is high for those grinders, we will have a free raffle for the seats in those grinders.

Cost for this event will be $24 (12 Generic Tickets for each player).

Availability/Schedule:  Thurs-Fri (9AM-Midnight).  Remember, no grinder will start later than 9 PM since this is a 3 hour event and the tourney hall closes at midnight.

We also wanted to update one of the sealed events that we are running at GenCon after it did so well at Origins.

HeroClix Giant-Size X-Men Super Booster Event:

Join us for this very special sealed event!  Bring up to 300 points of Modern Age figures and purchase 1 Giant Sixe X-Men super-booster.  Using the contents of your super-booster at its maximum point value and your selected figures, build the best 600 point force you can but you must use your colossal!  This event will be limited to 64 players so be sure to secure your place early.  Build the best team and tower over the competition!  Update!  Players who play in this event and finish all the rounds of the tourney will get a random Horseman of the Apocalypse figure as a participation prize.

Cost for this event will be $24 (12 Generic Tickets for each player).

Availability/Schedule:  Thursday, 1 PM

Don’t want to play in the tourney area?  Then come visit us in the WizKids Booth & Demo Area where demos will be running all weekend long and will include Quarriors (a personal favorite of mine when I’m not playing HeroClix), Star Trek Expeditions, Star Trek Fleet Captains, Mage Knight, Street Fighter, and many other games.  We will also be selling limited quantities of some of these games in our booth.  As always, it is while supplies last for product in the booth and we will only be taking cash for payment.

That’s all I’ve got for now but what other surprises could GenCon have in store for our players.  You’ll just have to wait and see…

On the Road…Where Does He Get Those Wonderful Toys?

That is one of my favorite lines from a movie (can you guess which movie?) but it also leads me to answer a question that has been on a lot of player’s minds recently.

How Do I Get Those Wonderful Convention Prizes?

So in the interest of letting the players know, let’s explain how it’s going to work.

At Origins Game Fair 2011, players will be able to win prizes in the following fashion:

Battle Royales will get the winner a random Horsemen of Apocalypse as a prize.

National Grinders are an 8-person, 3 round Swiss format tournament.  In the third round, 2 undefeated players will be playing off and the winner gets a seat at the National Finals on Saturday and his choice between 2 random Horsemen of Apocalypse and the loser gets the other Horsemen.

GSX Superbooster Event will get prizes for each player from amongst Horsemen of Apocalypse, GSX chases, and Dr. Manhattan Colossal figures.

Captain America Release Event will get Horsemen of Apocalypse as prizes for the top eight players.

National Finals will get the winner a badge for GenCon, a bye into the World Semi-Final Constructed Event on Saturday at GenCon, a set of the Horsemen of Apocalypse, and other prizes.  Second place through Fourth place will get a bye into the World Semi-Final Constructed Event on Saturday at GenCon, another Horsemen of Apocalypse figure, and other prizes.

At GenCon 2011, players will be able to win prizes in the following fashion:

Marvel Battle Royales will get the winner a Moonstone as a prize.

DC Battle Royales will get the winner a Wonder Woman as a prize.

King of the Hill on Thursday through Saturday will get the winner another 2 boosters of product so they can play again.  Make it to the King of the Hill Finals on Sunday and you will get a set of the Horsemen of Apocalypse.  Win the King of the Hill Final and you get to design your own ATA, BFC, or feat with game design plus Moonstone and Wonder Woman.

GSX Superbooster Event will get prizes for the top 16 players from amongst Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Moonstone, GSX chases, and Dr. Manhattan Colossal figures.

The Constructed Events will get prizes for 1st and 2nd place players from amongst Wonder Woman, Moonstone, and other prizes.

Worlds Grinders are an 8-person, 3 round Swiss format tournament.  In the third round, 2 undefeated players will be playing off and the winner gets a seat at the World Semi-Finals on Saturday and his choice between 2 random figures from a pool of Horsemen of Apocalypse, Moonstone, and Wonder Woman and the loser gets the other figure.

World Semi-Finals will get the top 16 players a prize from the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Moonstone, or Wonder Woman prize pool and a spot in the World Finals on Sunday.

World Finals will get the winner a prize package to include designing your own figure in an upcoming set (subject to licensor and WizKids approval).  Can you design the next Nightcrawler or Black Adam?  In addition the winner will get a set of Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Moonstone, and other fabulous prizes.  The rest of the top 16 players from Worlds will get prizes from amongst the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Moonstone, and other prizes.

As you can see, there are lots of wonderful prizes for our players at Origins and GenCon this year!

For those not attending the conventions, another way to get the Horsemen of Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, and Moonstone will be announced by the end of the year.

Wait, did I forget something…I have to find my cards so I can remember what it was…

On the Road…GenCon

After all of the fun and excitement of Origins and our HeroClix National tournament, we turn to the next big event on the calendar which is GenCon on August 4-7, 2011 (www.gencon.com).  This is the big event where we blow out all of the stops with tourneys of all shapes and sizes and for all levels of skill as well.

Are you a competitive player?  Then the HeroClix World Championship is for you.  Play in a grinder with 7 fellow players and prove that you can emerge undefeated and win a convention LE prize and move onto the Semi-Finals portion of the HeroClix World Championship event where you will join the top 4 players from the HeroClix National Championship from Origins.  Grinders allow you to play whenever we have 8 players ready to go.  Come early! Stay late!  The choice is yours with these grinder events.  Make it through the Semi-Final event and count yourself amongst the top 16 HeroClix players in the World.  Battle it out on Sunday with the other 16 players for the right to help design a HeroClix figure for a future expansion (pending licensor approval of course) plus other prizes if you are the HeroClix World Champion.

If the HeroClix World Championship isn’t your thing then play in a Battle Royale, King of the Hill, or 1 of 8 other tourneys over the course of 4 days like the HeroClix Giant Size Super Booster event or the HeroClix Golden Age event.  Don’t want the pressure of playing in an event, then HeroClix Open Play is for you!  Give us a generic ticket and you can play whatever type of HeroClix game that you want with your friends (of course pending available table space).  We listened to the feedback from last year and will have extended hours on Thursday and Friday so you can play from 9 AM in the morning until Midnight.  That’s 15 hours of HeroClix gaming! (Boy am I and the other volunteers going to be tired!)  An important thing to note is that playing in tourneys in the hall requires GenCon specific event tickets or generic event tickets as we are not allowed to take cash for events.  Start signing up for ticketed events on May 1st at the GenCon website.

Don’t want to play in a tourney, then stop by the booth where you can demo our dice game Quarriors, explore space in the Star Trek Expeditions game, battle it out with Street Fighter HeroClix, or see a demo of HeroClix Online plus many other games yet to be revealed.  Want to purchase product in the booth, it must be done with cash (as always it’s while supplies last).

Please don’t forget to keep coming back to the WizKids website as we will be having several announcements in the coming weeks like retirement, a new player’s guide, and the cool prizes of….sorry, don’t want to spoil Jerome’s fun on this one!

We look forward to seeing all of you at GenCon 2011!

On the Road…Spoiling for a Fight

As always, I look forward to convention season because of getting to see friends that I only see during that time.  Inevitably, we argue and fight about where to eat and what movie to see (trust me this one gets debated endlessly).  Players battle it out day after day on their way to the finals of the Championship event and everyone is spoiling for a fight but really wants to win the War and emerge as the champ.  No different was Apocalypse’s plan for survival of the fittest as he wanted the best mutants and rounding out his troops is the final Horsemen of the Apocalypse War.

Abraham Kieros was a soldier who knew much about fighting for survival as he survived the Vietnam War but it cost him his mobility.  Chosen by Apocalypse, he readily accepted and was given his limbs back and a steed to ride into combat as evidenced by the transporter icon on the dial.  Just by clapping his hands he could make things Explode from Within (Penetrating/Psychic Blast) or cause Rings of Explosions (Pulse Wave) to help him defeat those who would oppose Apocalypse.   Of course, he comes in at 99 points so team him with Famine, Pestilence, and Archangel along with the Horsemen of Apocalypse ATA for a 400 point team that can test who is truly the fittest to survive on a HeroClix map!

Origins is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at GenCon.  For those not attending the conventions, another way to get this figure will be announced by the end of the year.

That ends these previews but there is so much more to talk about like the events at GenCon and the special prizes…what’s that Jerome…fine you win this fight and I won’t say anymore!

On the Road…Gamer Funk

One of the things that isn’t so great about conventions is gamer funk.  Those that have been will immediately recognize the smell and those that haven’t been to a convention will eventually be treated to it when they go.  I would dare say that it’s a Pestilence at the conventions or a Plague if you would have it.  So too is our next convention preview of the Second Horseman of the Apocalypse Pestilence a way to plague your opponents.

Plague was a Morlock who survived the Mutant Massacre in the tunnels of New York and was chosen by Apocalypse to be his Horsemen Pestilence.  She readily accepted and was given the power to Plague those who did not live up to Apocalypse’s vision of survival of the fittest.  Her Plague power can affect the toughest of opponents with poison that deals penetrating damage while using it.  In addition to her powers, Apocalypse gave her a steed to ride into combat as evidenced by the transporter icon on the dial.  Of course, she also comes in at 99 points and the Horsemen of Apocalypse ATA would be a welcome addition if teamed with Famine and some other friends as well!

Origins is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at GenCon.  For those not attending the conventions, another way to get this figure will be announced by the end of the year.

Well, that’s all that I’ve got time for now as the thought of gamer funk is driving me away.  Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting preview!

On the Road…Famished

One of the items that I always think of when convention season comes around is of all the great food that I get to eat while I’m on the road.  At Origins, it’s the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the food court of the convention center.  Working the convention, I need to stock up on food to get through the day and it’s no different if your opponent is fielding the First Horsemen of the Apocalypse Famine.

Autumn Rolfson was a teen with an eating disorder before being turned into Famine by Apocalypse.  To show her new power as Famine, she can Starve the opponent with her special power and give action tokens to each adjacent opposing character.  Thus, slowing down the competition as they have to deal with being hungry and having to stop and eat food or otherwise starve to death (just like Beast stopping to eat junk food in the comic).  In addition to her powers, Apocalypse gave her a steed to ride into combat as evidenced by the transporter icon on the dial.  Of course, she also comes in at 99 points and the Horsemen of Apocalypse ATA would be a welcome addition if she just had some friends with her as well!

Origins is the first convention that this figure will be available at as a prize but don’t worry this figure will also be available at GenCon.  For those not attending the conventions, another way to get this figure will be announced by the end of the year.

Well, I’ve got to go because all this talk of food has made me hungry.  Tune in tomorrow for the next exciting preview!
